Shooting victim still in critical condition, but communicating

A 25-year-old woman who was the victim of a Tuesday night shooting in Berwick is communicating through hand movements at a New Orleans hospital, Berwick Police Chief James Richard said this morning.
The victim is in critical but stable condition at a hospital in New Orleans, Richard said.
Berwick police arrested Matilda Amos, 23, of Todd Street in Berwick, at 4 a.m. Wednesday on the charge of attempted second-degree murder after Amos allegedly shot a woman in the head at a home on Todd Street. Amos is in jail with bail set at $500,000.
Police received a report at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday of a gunshot at or near a Todd Street residence, Richard said. Upon arrival, officers found a female victim lying in the front yard of a home on Todd Street with a gunshot wound to the head, he said.
The victim was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Teche Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to a New Orleans hospital, Richard said.
After the shooting Tuesday night, Berwick police issued a be-on-the-lookout advisory for Amos. An Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped the vehicle Amos was traveling in and apprehended her. St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel also assisted Berwick police in the investigation.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and investigators are still trying to determine a possible motive, Richard said. Officers have yet to interview the victim about the shooting due to her condition.
