Woman accused of stealing over $5K from cash register

A 24-year-old Patterson woman was charged Wednesday with stealing more than $5,000 from a cash register in 2016 at her place of employment in Bayou Vista, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Dondelai Verdun, 24, of Clement Street in Patterson, was arrested at 8:41 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging her with theft.
In January, a deputy responded to a report of theft from a store in Bayou Vista. The deputy spoke with store security personnel and was presented with evidence that Verdun, an employee, stole over $5,000 in cash from a cash register over a period of several months in 2016.
Following the investigation, a warrant was issued. Verdun turned herself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Morgan City after learning of the warrant for her arrest. A deputy transported her to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Verdun was released on $2,500 bail.
Hebert reported responding to 37 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Kenneth L. Benoit, 36, of Carol Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 2:14 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended license, no driver’s license on person and careless operation of a vehicle with a crash.
A deputy monitoring traffic on the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City during state Department of Transportation and Development bridge inspections observed two vehicles that were involved in a crash. The deputy found that one of the drivers, identified as Benoit, was operating the vehicle without a driver’s license.
During the crash investigation, the deputy also discovered that Benoit was driving with a suspended license. Benoit was released on a summons to appear in court June 13.
—Elton Pinn, 33, of St. Clair Alley in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:27 a.m. Thursday on the charge of resisting an officer.
Deputies responded to Chirpy’s Lane in Amelia to a complaint of a dispute. Deputies learned that Pinn took a family members vehicle without permission following an argument. With the assistance of Morgan City Police, the vehicle was located at a home on St. Clair Alley.
Accompanied by Morgan City Police officers, a deputy made contact with a woman at the home. She told the deputy that Pinn was not at the location. Meanwhile, at the back door, another deputy spotted Pinn attempting to leave.
Pinn saw the deputy and fled back into the home. Following the investigation, Pinn was released on a summons to appear in court June 13.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Joseph A. Acosta, 24, of Pecos Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:42 a.m. Wednesday on the charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle and criminal damage to property.
Officers responded to a home on Idaho Street in regard to a reported disturbance. When officers arrived, they spoke with the complainant who told the officers that the complainant was involved in an argument with Acosta.
During the argument Acosta attempted to leave the home but could not due to the complainant’s vehicle parked in front of his in the driveway. Officers were told that Acosta struck the vehicle pushing it out of the way and left the area. Acosta along with his vehicle was located at a home on Grove Street moments later.
During an investigation, officers found evidence of the alleged damaged property, and Acosta was jailed.
—Sandra Dominguez, 55, of East 175 Street in Bronx, New York, was arrested at 3:03 p.m. Wednesday on the charge of theft by shoplifting-value $72.59.
Officers responded to a local retail store on Seventh Street in regard to a reported shoplifter. Police were told that the suspect had walked out of the store and was attempting to flee the area. Officers located a woman, identified as Dominguez, matching the reported description in the area.
As officers approached, Dominguez began discarding several items onto the ground. Dominguez was detained for further investigation.
Investigators spoke with store employees who told the officers that Dominguez was suspected of stealing several items from the store and leaving without payment. Police found evidence of the alleged theft, and Dominguez was jailed.
—Lectoria Grogan, 28, of St. Claire Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:21 a.m. Thursday on warrants for failure to appear on the charges of simple battery, criminal damage to property, resisting an officer and disturbing the peace intoxicated
Officers located Grogan and arrested her on city court warrants. Grogan was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
