American Press, Lake Charles, La., on telling Legislature what you want:
The Louisiana Legislature convened Monday with about 1,200 bills to consider during its 60 days in session before adjournment on June 2.
Though it appears to lack the rancor of the last two sessions, there’s still plenty of lightning rod issues that will touch off battles: the status and implementation of Common Core standards for education; the allotment of money in the state budget; efforts to scale back spending or toughen requirements for the Louisiana Tuition Opportunity Pro-gram (TOPS); and the campaign to scuttle what could be a landmark lawsuit over oil and gas companies’ decades-long damages to the state’s coastal region.
How legislators are able to spend their campaign funds should also a hot topic, but don’t hold your breath waiting for any meaningful reform that will add much needed ethics to the process.
In boxing parlance, those appear to be the main event, with hundreds of other issues on the undercard.
State lawmakers may be feeling a bit more independence, given that Gov. Bobby Jindal is in his next-to-last year of his final term and indications are that he will be out of state more than ever as he tests the waters for his own presidential ambitions.
