’Jacks use big 3rd quarter to beat Kittens

Spencer Landry hooked up with Daylon Charlot for three scores to lead Patterson to a 51-24 victory against Southern Lab Friday at Louisiana Leadership Institute’s Doug Williams Stadium.
Southern Lab (0-6) scored first on a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bladrick Veal to Curtlan Williams with 3:28 remaining in the opening quarter.
Patterson (4-2) wasted little time answering the Kittens’ score. Landry led an 8-play, 61-yard drive capped by a 6-yard pass to Jedrick Gunner early in the second quarter.
Landry and Charlot got going after that with scoring passes of 48-yards, 15-yards and 38-yards to propel the Lumberjacks to a 28-12 halftime lead.
“We did a lot of good things, but we also made some mistakes,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “We have to clean up some things.”
Landry was highly efficient in the passing game as he completed 20-of-28 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns.
Charlot was Landry’s top target, pulling in four catches for 102 yards and three scores. Mykel Jones added five catches for 58 yards, while Gunner had four catches for 45 yards and a score.
Patterson also got a 100-yard rushing night from Deontay Jones. Jones carried 16 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
“We’ve got better running the football, and we are going to keep working at it,” Minton said. “We faced those 5A schools that were very physical upfront, and we’re going to get better as the season goes on.”
Tristen Ausama also had 48 yards on six carries.
Patterson broke the game open in the third quarter with a safety and big kickoff return by Nehemiah Augustus for a 37-12 lead with 10:02 remaining.
Augustus also led the Lumberjack defense with four sacks and relentless pressure on Veal all night.
Shundren Johnson, Taylor Harris and Gunner also had sacks in the game.
“We had a bunch of negative plays, but we gave up a couple deep balls,” Minton said. “The referees wouldn’t let us play physical, so that handcuffed us some.”
Patterson was flagged for five pass interference calls, including three on one series. The ’Jacks had a season-high eight penalties for 110 yards.
“We had way too many penalties,” Minton said. “You go on the road, and you get the home association, you can’t expect to get close (calls). We had to battle through that.”
Southern Lab also was penalized nine times for 85 yards.
Patterson’s offense rolled up nearly 500 yards in the contest.
Patterson opens District 9-3A play Friday at Donaldsonville (3-3, 0-1). The Tigers lost 48-22 to E.D. White Friday.
