Barron selected first team all-state

Central Catholic’s Charlie Barron was selected to the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Class 1A All-State Football First Team, and three other Eagles made honorable mention all-state, according to an article published Thursday in The Advocate.
Barron, a 6-foot, 175-pound senior free safety for the Eagles, had 10 interceptions, 47 tackles and three fumble recoveries this season.
“Charlie just did a great job all year,” Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton said. “He’s a very good free safety that always seemed to be in the right spot, made a lot of turnovers.” Barron played a key role getting turnovers and putting the Eagles’ offense on a short field, Minton said.
Central Catholic’s T.J. Ruffin, Garret LeBlanc and Stefano Guarisco were named honorable mention selections, according to The Advocate.
Ruffin, a 5-foot, 10-inch, 245-pound junior defensive lineman, was critical to helping stop the run at nose guard, Minton said. He recorded 51 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks and two fumble recoveries. Ruffin was a big, physical player who did “a good job of clogging up the middle of the defense,” Minton said.
LeBlanc, a 6-foot, 1-inch, 220-pound senior who was the co-defensive MVP of the district, was always around the football and did a good job of being a leader on defense, Minton said. LeBlanc played a lot on offense and defense as a fullback and linebacker but never wore down, Minton said. LeBlanc had 107 tackles, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks.
Guarisco, a 5-foot, 8-inch, 180-pound junior running back, was “a big spark for us on offense,” Minton said. “He did so much for us, played quarterback when Blake (Byrne) got hurt. Also, he was one of the leading rushers in the state and just did a great job all year long just being there when we called his number and playing hard.”
Guarisco had 258 carries for 1,428 yards and 23 touchdowns. Guarisco also made 19 receptions for 323 yards and three touchdowns.
