Berwick drops season opener

Berwick had more errors than hits as the Lady Panthers started their season with an 8-1 defeat to Ascension Catholic in Donaldsonville Tuesday.
Berwick finished with 10 errors and six hits.
Meanwhile, Ascension Catholic, the defending Class 1A state runner-up, had seven hits and one error.
Ascension Catholic jumped on top early with a four-run first inning.
While Berwick plated a run in the top of the fourth, the home team came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the bottom of the sixth.
Rennen Delatte took the loss for Berwick, tossing six innings.
Offensively, Mary Jordan Melancon led Berwick with two hits, including a double, while Shelby Bergeron also had two hits.
Berwick (0-1) will return to action Thursday when it travels to face Assumption in Napoleonville at 3:30 p.m.
Morgan City wins
in nine innings
The Morgan City High School baseball team rallied late in the ball game to tie it and then prevailed in extra innings in a 7-6 win against Plaquemine in both teams’ season opener Monday.
The Tigers, who trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning, rallied with three runs in the frame to knot the game at 6.
The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when Morgan City pushed across what proved to be the game-winning run.
Ethan Scioneaux earned the win in relief. In three innings, he surrendered two runs on four hits and fanned two.
Rhett Fryou started the game, and in six innings, he surrendered four runs on three hits and fanned five.
Offensive, the Tigers pounded out 17 hits.
Evan Stadalis had four hits, while Malik Phillips and Josh Lorenzo had three hits and Matt Lorenzo and Fryou had two hits.
Morgan City (1-0) will return to action Thursday when it opens play in the Tri-City Baseball Classic with a 7:45 p.m. contest against Central Lafourche at Tiger Diamond in Morgan City.
