Berwick to face E.D. White

The top two teams in District 9-3A will meet for a second time today when Berwick and E.D. White square off in Thibodaux.
This time, however, instead of a district championship on the line, the two teams will be fighting to keep their season alive when they square off in Class 3A Bi-District playoff action at 4:30 p.m. in Thibodaux.
E.D. White (14-6) enters the playoffs as the No. 10 seed, while Berwick (13-17) is the No. 23 seed.
In their previous matchup, E.D. White rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 6-4 Berwick deficit for the victory.
In the win, E.D. White scored runs via a hit-by pitch with the bases loaded, while Anna Rodenberg singled to left field, scoring two runs, for what ended up being the 7-6 final.
On the mound in that game, E.D. White’s Avery Sanders earned the win. In seven innings of work, she surrendered six runs on 13 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Rennen DeLatte suffered the loss for Berwick as she surrendered seven runs on 10 hits with one hit batter and fanned one.
Offensively for Berwick, Sydney Aucoin finished 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, while University of Louisiana at Lafayette signee Shannon Theriot finished 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, an RBI and two runs. Other top offensive contributors for Berwick included Jordan Lipari, 3-for-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs; Louisiana College signee Shelby Bergeron, 2-for-3, two stolen bases and two runs; and Jaci Arnold, 2-for-3.
“That was a great high school softball game,” Berwick coach Lloyd Burchfield said after the game. “We didn’t win, but its why we do what we do. We didn’t quite do enough to win. We didn’t get (any) breaks, but you make breaks usually. They’re a pretty good softball team, and I think we’re right there with ’em.”
That win was part of a seven-game winning streak for the Lady Cardinals, who last lost 2-0 to Parkview Baptist on March 21 in Brusly’s tournament.
While Berwick comes into today’s game with a losing record, the Lady Panthers have faced their typical brutal nondistrict schedule that featured some of the state’s better teams.
This postseason will be the last for Burchfield, who announced last month he would be retiring after this season and was honored after the first E.D. White contest.
Burchfield could not be reached for comment for today’s article.
