Berwick falls to Lutcher in five games

In a battle to retain second place in the Division 3, District 6 standings, Berwick High School gave Lutcher everything it wanted but came up short in five games, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 8-15.
With the loss, the Lady Panthers, ranked 13th in Division 3 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, slipped to 4-3 in district play, while Lutcher, Division 3’s 4th-ranked squad, improved to 5-2.
The Lady Panthers recorded seven blocks and 100 digs in the contest, led by Hannah Carpenter’s 36. Carpenter also added six aces.
Other top contributors included Brie Hill, 23 kills, three blocks and 15 digs; Ashton Morales, three kills, three blocks, 25 assists and 18 digs; Abigail Askew, seven kills, one block, one assist and two digs; Maddie Gray, one ace, five kills and nine digs; and Diana Grace Guarisco, one kill, two assists and nine digs.
In junior varsity action, Berwick fell 25-20, 25-27, 11-15.
Berwick will return to action Thursday when it travels to face Patterson in a district contest. Junior varsity action is set for a 4:30 p.m. start, with varsity play to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Patterson defeats
Donaldsonville
Patterson snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 25-19, 25-21) win against Donaldsonville in Division 3 District 6 play on the road Tuesday.
Nyria Robinson had three points and 10 kills for Patterson, while Gaylen Grogan added two points, three aces, four kills and two blocks.
Other top contributors included Tamia Washington, four points, two aces and five kills; Kailyn Johnson, four points and 10 assists; Makayla Ruiz, three kills and a block; and Arian Grogan, one point, two kills and a block.
Central Catholic clinches
share of district title
Central Catholic clinched at least a share of the Division 5, District 6 title with a win against Houma Christian in straight sets.
The Lady Eagles, the No. 3 team in Division 5, won the sets 25-16, 25-13, 25-8.
Meo Knight led Central Catholic with 11 kills, three aces and four blocks; Gee Garrett, 10 kills and three blocks; and Kaitlyn Gros, 20 assists.
The Lady Eagles will return to action Thursday when they face Covenant Christian at home in district play on Senior Night.
With a win, the Lady Eagles (25-8, 4-0 in district) can clinch the district title outright.
Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow at 5 p.m.
Morgan City falls to
E.D. White
Morgan City dropped a Division 3, District 6 contest to E.D. White in straight sets in Morgan City Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers fell 11-25, 5-25 and 12-25 to Division 3’s third-ranked squad.
Layne Reynaud had three kills, two assists and six digs; Savannah Loupe, eight digs; and Cecily Feliciano, an ace and five digs.
Other top contributors included Brandi Ingram, five digs; and Taylor Prince, a block and two digs.
The Lady Tigers were without junior standout Jaiveianna Jones for the contest.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City fell 16-25, 16-25.
Feliciano had two aces, two kills, one assist and four digs, while Dwanna LeBeau had four kills and a dig.
Other top contributors included Karley Guidry, three aces and three assists; and Sara Gaudet, five digs.
In freshmen action, Morgan City fell 11-25, 12-25.
The Lady Tigers (10-19, 3-4) will return to action Thursday when they host district foe Lutcher at home. Freshmen action is set for a 3:30 p.m. start, while junior varsity and varsity action will follow.
