Berwick High rallies to top Plaquemine, 8-6

Berwick used a big sixth inning to overtake Plaquemine for an 8-6 win on the road Tuesday.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the sixth, the Lady Panthers scored five runs for an 8-5 advantage.
Plaquemine added a run in the bottom of the sixth but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Plaquemine took as much as a 4-0 lead after three innings before Berwick scored three runs in the top of the fourth.
Plaquemine added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Berwick had their big inning.
Jordan Lipari earned the win in relief. In five innings, she allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and fanned five.
Sydney Aucoin started, and in two innings, she surrendered an earned run on a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
Just three of Plaquemine’s six runs were earned as the Lady Panthers committed three errors.
Plaquemine had four miscues.
Offensively, Lipari led Berwick with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and an RBI. Other top contributors included Rosalyn Gros, 1-for-3, a double, two RBIs and a run; Jaci Arnold, 1-for-4, a double, two RBIs and a run; Madison Carline, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; and Emma Hover, 1-for-4, an RBI.
On Saturday, Berwick fell to Ascension Catholic, 8-2.
Ascension Catholic never trailed, taking a 3-0 lead in the third.
After Berwick cut its deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Ascension Catholic exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.
Ascension Catholic outhit Berwick 11-3, while just three of their runs were earned.
Aucoin suffered the loss for Berwick. In three innings, she surrendered three runs — two earned — on five hits with four strikeouts.
Offensively, Lipari led the squad with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI. Madeleine Hover finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run
Berwick (3-1) will open District 8-3A play Thursday when it hosts Patterson in a 4 p.m. contest.
CCHS drops
district opener
Central Catholic dropped its District 7-1A opener, 18-12, to Vermilion Catholic in Bayou Vista Tuesday.
In a back-and-forth game, Central Catholic took leads of 1-0 after an inning and 3-1 after two complete innings.
However, Vermilion Catholic responded with an eight-run frame in the top of the third for a 9-3 advantage.
Central Catholic cut its deficit to 8-5 after three innings, and while Vermilion Catholic added two runs in the top of the fourth, Central Catholic countered with seven in the bottom of the frame for a 12-11 lead.
However, Vermilion Catholic would score seven unanswered runs during the next three innings, including four in the sixth, to secure the victory.
Brooke Lipari, the third of five Central Catholic pitchers used, suffered the loss. In 1.1 innings, she surrendered three earned runs on one hit with four walks.
Starter Sarah Thomas pitched two innings and surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
While Central Catholic pitchers combined for four strikeouts, they surrendered 15 hits and nine walks.
Offensively, Central Catholic collected 14 hits, led by Emma Aucoin, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a run and three stolen bases. Other top offensive contributors included Kaleigh Navarro, 3-for-4, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Kelly Russo, 2-for-4, an RBI and two runs; Hallie Autin, 2-for-5, a double, an RBI and a run; and Lipari, 1-for-5, an RBI and a run.
This past weekend, Central Catholic finished 0-3 at Terrebonne’s tournament, falling to Assumption, Ursuline and Vandebilt Catholic.
Against Assumption, a Class 4A quarterfinalist in 2015, Central Catholic fell 16-6 in five innings.
Central Catholic took its only lead of the game in the top of the first with a 2-0 advantage.
Assumption plated four runs in the bottom of the first and eight more in the second for a 12-2 advantage.
Each team plated two runs in the third, while Assumption scored two in the fourth and Central Catholic, two in the fifth before the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Lady Eagles surrendered five unearned runs in the loss.
Thomas suffered the loss for the Eagles. In 1.1 innings, she surrendered seven earned runs on six hits with two walks.
Taylor Picou led Central Catholic with a 3-for-3 performance with a home run, three RBIs, two stolen bases and three runs. Other top contributors included Aucoin, 3-for-3, three stolen bases and two runs; Navarro, 1-for-2, an RBI; and Ava Nicar, an RBI.
In their second game of the tournament, Central Catholic fell to Ursuline, 8-2.
The Lady Eagles never trailed as Ursuline took a 2-0 lead after an inning and led 2-1 after two complete.
Ursuline scored five in the bottom of the third for a 7-1 game en route to the victory.
Thomas suffered the loss for Central Catholic. In six innings, she surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits with one walk and fanned two.
Russo led Central Catholic with a 2-for-2 performance with a run. Other top contributors included Autin, 1-for-3, a double and a run; and Cameron McDaniel, 1-for-2, an RBI.
In the Lady Eagles final game of the tournament, they fell 16-11 to Vandebilt Catholic in six innings.
In a back-and-forth game, Central Catholic led 6-3 after three innings but trailed 8-6 after four.
The teams combined for 13 runs in the fifth with Vandebilt Catholic plating eight and Central Catholic, five.
While Central Catholic outhit Vandebilt Catholic 12-11, the Lady Eagles’ four pitchers combined for eight walks. Five of Vandebilt Catholic’s runs were unearned.
Russo, the second of four pitchers, suffered the loss. In 1.2 innings, she surrendered three earned runs on three hits with one walk.
Nicar started, and in three innings, she surrendered four earned runs on five hits with four walks.
Offensively, Picou led Central Catholic with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, three RBIs, a stolen base and a run. Other top contributors included McDaniel, 3-for-4, a stolen base and two runs; Lipari, 2-for-4, a double, a stolen base and two runs; Navarro, 1-for-4, three RBIs and a run; Autin, 1-for-4, a double, two RBIs and a run; and Nicar, an RBI.
Central Catholic (1-4 overall, 0-1 in district) will return to action Thursday when it hosts Highland Baptist in a 5 p.m. contest.
Morgan City finishes 2-1 at Terrebonne’s tourney
Morgan City finished 2-1 at Terrebonne’s tournament this weekend, defeating De La Salle and Central Lafourche but falling to Archbishop Chapelle.
Against De La Salle, Morgan City scored all of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Morgan City scored a run in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Defensively, the Tigers limited De La Salle to four hits. Kennedy Hebert tossed a complete game, fanning 13 and walking three.
Offensively, Hebert finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Dwanna LeBeau was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run. Other top contributors included Scottie Metrejean, 1-for-3, a triple; Nia Lightfoot, 1-for-2, a double and a run; and Hannah Prado, an RBI.
On Saturday, Morgan City defeated Central Lafourche, 10-1. Morgan City did most of its damage in the second and third innings. Morgan City plated five runs in the second, and after Central Lafourche scored a run in the top of the third, Morgan City added three more in the bottom of the frame. Morgan City plated single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth.
LeBeau finished 3-for-4, two doubles and three runs, while Hebert was 2-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs. Other top offensive contributors included Blanchard, 2-for-3, two
RBIs and two runs; Gracie Verrett, 2-for-3, an RBI and a run; Allie Vincent, 1-for-3, a double and a run; Gabrielle Thibodeaux, an RBI and a run; and Lightfoot, an RBI and a run.
On the mound, Hebert surrendered one earned run on three hits with one walk and fanned 12 in seven innings of work.
Against Archbishop Chapelle, Morgan City fell 5-4.
Chapelle scored two runs each in the first and third innings and another in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage.
Morgan City got all of its scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
Morgan City committed seven errors in the loss, and just one of Archbishop Chapelle’s runs was earned.
Hebert led Morgan City on the mound and at the plate. She pitched seven innings and surrendered five runs — one earned — on six hits with one walk and fanned 10.
Offensively, she was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Thibodaux also finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Morgan City will return to action Friday when it takes on Kaplan at 3 p.m. in Berwick’s Lady Panther Classic.
Patterson finishes 1-2 at Terrebonne’s tournament
The Patterson Lumberjills finished 1-2 at Terrebonne’s tournament, defeating Ellender but falling to South Terrebonne and H.L. Bourgeois.
Against South Terrebonne, Patterson trailed just 3-2 after two innings, but South Terrebonne plated two runs apiece in the third and fourth before erupting for seven in the sixth.
South Terrebonne outhit Patterson 14-3.
Against Ellender, Patterson won 12-2.
The Lumberjills never trailed, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.
While Ellender scored a run in the third, Patterson added five more runs in the fourth for a 10-1 lead en route to the victory.
Against H.L. Bourgeois, Patterson fell 22-5.
No individual statistics were available for any of the three games.
Patterson (1-3) will return to action Thursday when it squares off against Berwick at Berwick in both teams’ District 8-3A opener. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
