Berwick holds off Patterson, 3-1, in District 8-3A action

Berwick High School defeated Patterson, 3-1, in District 8-3A action in Patterson Sunday.
While the Lumberjacks (9-9 overall, 1-2 in district) fell by two runs, they threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, advancing a runner to third base with one out.
However, Berwick (9-13, 4-1) got out of the jam via a fielder’s choice, and Patterson’s John Brooks’ deep fly ball to left field was caught to end the ball game.
Each team scored a run in the first inning, while Berwick plated a run in the top of the third. The Panthers extended their lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the seventh.
Austin Price earned the win for Berwick. In 5.1 innings, he surrendered one run on three hits with one walk and fanned six.
Nick Mayon earned the save. In 1.2 innings, he surrendered two hits.
Offensively, D.J. Robicheaux led Berwick with a 1-for-1 performance with an RBI, while Bradley Gray was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Tyrik Singleton suffered the loss for Patterson. In six innings, he surrendered two earned runs on four hits with one walk, two hit batters and three strikeouts.
Singleton led the Lumberjacks at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
The two teams will square off again Tuesday in Berwick when they meet in a 6 p.m. contest.

Central Catholic’s District 7-1A contest in Amelia against Highland Baptist Friday was rained out.
The Eagles (14-3, 4-0) and the Bears now will play a doubleheader at Highland Baptist Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Also, Central Catholic’s District 7-1A contest against Vermilion Catholic has been moved up from Friday to Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
