Berwick to host Haynes Friday

Berwick High School will step out of District 8-3A action this week when they host Class 2A Haynes Academy Friday.
“They’re a good football team,” Berwick High School Coach Craig Brodie said. “They’re kind of a new school, a charter school that came out awhile back, and (I’ve) kind of been looking at them. We had an opening in week 8 in our district schedule and so did they, so it kind of worked out well.”
Berwick (2-5 overall, 1-3 in district) comes into the contest after falling a week ago to Kaplan, 32-13, in District 8-3A action.
While Berwick led 13-8 after the first quarter via a Collin Louviere two-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Louviere to Larenz Clark, Kaplan exploded for 24 points in the second quarter for a 32-13 lead.
However, the game’s scoring ended there as neither team reached the end zone in the second half.
This week’s opponent, Metairie-based Haynes, is 6-1 overall with a five-game winning streak. Their most recent victory was an 18-12 win against Thomas Jefferson a week ago in District 8-2A play.
“They definitely have the best season (this year) they’ve had in their history of the school, so we’re going to have our hands full,” Brodie said. “They have a real good quarterback. They have a senior tailback, and some of their major players are seniors, so they’re going to be a good squad.”
Berwick was led offensively this season and against Kaplan by Louviere. The sophomore has rushed 81 times for 347 yards and three touchdowns, while he has completed 45-of-117 passes for 749 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Audwin Williams leads the receivers and the Tri-City area with 30 catches for 562 yards and six touchdowns, while teammate Kenan Jones has caught 13 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns.
“We feel like we match up well against them, and the kids (have) been working real hard. I think we’re going to come out with a win,” Brodie said.
As for Haynes, Brodie said, “Offensively, they’re mostly double tight. We call (it) kind of an ace formation. Double tight, double slot, double wide outs, one back. Very Pro-Style offense. They run stretch and they run zone and they run bootleg off it, playing action off it.”
Defensively, Brodie said Haynes uses a “basic cover 3” look.
“They work real hard,” he said. “We’ve had some good success against cover 3. If they’re going to play off our outside receivers, we’re going to throw the short passes, and when they start coming up, we’re going to try to get behind them. It’s just basically a read thing that we do, and we’ve had a lot of success with that.”
He said Haynes uses a four-man front along the defensive line.
“They don’t do a whole bunch,” Brodie said. “They play good technique and they run to the ball well, so we just got to do what we do well and hopefully it’ll be enough.”
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
