The Berwick High School baseball team will open Class 3A postseason play today at 5 p.m. when it hosts Jennings in first-round action.
Berwick (15-15) enters the contest as the No. 14 seed, while Jennings is the No. 19 seed.
The Panthers finished as District 8-3A runner-up with a 9-3 mark, with its lone losses to Erath and E.D. White twice, the second of which actually was a forfeit after Berwick had won the game on the field. The Panthers were forced to forfeit the game due to a violation of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s pitching rule.
While Berwick had a rough start to the season with a 5-12 mark prior to opening district play, the Panthers since have won 10 of their last 13 games. Included in that run was a 5-4 upset victory against then-Class 5A’s top-ranked team, Lafayette High, 5-4, and a win against then-Class 3A top five team, Erath, 6-3.
Berwick enters today’s game on a two-game winning streak after sweeping the District 8-3A series with North Vermilion. The first of the two games was a marathon contest as the game was played over three days at three different fields before Berwick finally won the game 13-11 in 11 innings.
Berwick’s first-round opponent, Jennings, enters today’s contest with a 13-15 overall mark, including a 3-7 record in District 4-3A action. Jennings finished tied with Iowa for last place in district.
Jennings enters today’s game on a six-game losing streak as its last win came April 1 when the squad defeated DeRidder, 15-7.
In its regular season finale, Jennings fell to St. Louis in district play, 10-0. St. Louis is the No. 3 seed in the Class 3A postseason, while another team from the district, South Beauregard, is Class 4A’s fourth-ranked squad. Jennings defeated South Beauregard in the first of two district games against the school, 12-6.
Berwick and Jennings have two common opponents, Brusly and Kaplan. Jennings fell to both, while Berwick fell to Brusly but won both district games against Kaplan.
