Berwick, MCHS finish seasons at Division 3 meet

Berwick and Morgan City concluded their seasons at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division 3 state swim meet Thursday at SPAR Aquatic Center.
The Panthers finished 17th with 31 points, while the Tigers finished 18th with 10 points.
The Lady Panthers finished 14th with 28 points.
E.D. White and Vandebilt Catholic cruised to titles in boys’ and girls’ action. E.D. White finished with 308 points, while Vandebilt recorded 308.5 points.
The Panthers and Lady Panthers advanced their relay teams to the finals as well as Joshua Miller in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
“It was a really good meet, and the kids did a really good job,” Berwick coach B.J. Castaneda said. “(It was a) good way to end the season.”
Castaneda said that Miller recorded a personal record in the 100 freestyle, while she said all of the Lady Panthers’ relays this year recorded personal bests.
Morgan City coach Becky Bergeron said her squad was hurt as far as possible points because it had to withdraw from the 400 relay due to an injury to one of their swimmers, Dylon Mayon.
“We still beat who we needed to beat and earned the 15th spot in both relays that we could swim in, keeping us in the top 16,” she said, referring to the men’s 200 medley relay and the men’s 200 free relay.
The 200 freestyle finished 14th and the 200 medley finished 15th.
Bergeron noted that she has a young group of swimmers with only one senior, Trevor Vaughn.
“We’re going to have a really strong team next year because of the age of my swimmers,” Bergeron said.
Berwick
While Miller finished with a better showing in the finals in the 50-yard freestyle with a seventh-place finish and a time of 24.09, he recorded a personal record in the finals of the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.22. The time was good enough for 12th place.
In the relays, the Lady Panthers’ 400-yard freestyle relay of Shanna Roussel, Carley Hebert, Josie Estay and Olivia Gilbert finished 12th in the finals with a time of 4:54.52, more than a second faster than their time entering preliminaries.
In the girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay, Berwick shaved more than three seconds off their time entering preliminaries as they finished the meet with a 12th place finish in the finals at 2:06.77. They entered preliminaries with a time of 2:08.74. The relay consisted of Roussel, Hebert, Estay and Gilbert.
In the girls’ 200-yard medley relay, Berwick’s team of Roussel, Abbie Koen, Estay and Gilbert finished 13th overall with a time of 2:24.20, more than a second better than their time entering preliminaries.
In the boys’ relays, the Panthers finished 15th in the 200-yard freestyle relay but shaved nearly four seconds off their time from when they entered preliminaries to the finals. The squad, consisting of John Maynard, Christopher Reggie, Nicholas Mayon and Miller, finished with a time of 1:54.87, more than a second better than their 1:56.22 time they recorded in preliminaries and nearly four seconds better than the 1:58.65 they came to state with.
Berwick finished 13th in the finals in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.36. The relay consisted of Maynard, Sam Wilburn, Mayon and Miller.
The Panthers also finished 16th in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:22.88. The relay consisted of Mikie Martin, Mayon, Maynard and Wilburn.
Morgan City
In the finals, Morgan City’s 200 medley relay finished with a time of 2:10.91, while its 400 medley relay finished with a time of 1:53.02, almost a second better than its entry time of 1:53.80.
The two relays consisted of Ethan Aucoin, Carter Arcemont, Vaughn and Hunter Gaspard.
In individual competition, Vaughn could not advance out of the preliminaries in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 freestyle, but he did record an 18th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:09.64. His time of 2:21.34 in the 200 freestyle ranked 28th.
“Trevor Vaughn was faced with tough competition at state in his individual events,” Bergeron said.
