Berwick Panthers dominate Haynes Academy, 41-6

Berwick dominated the Haynes Academy Yellow Jackets Friday night en route to a 41-6 win, compiling more than 400 yards of total offense in the Panthers’ third win of the season.
With the win, Berwick improves to 3-5, the most wins the Panthers have had in a season since 2009.
On their first possession of the game, the Panthers drove 85 yards down the field and scored with 31 seconds left in the first quarter on a 3-yard run by backup freshman quarterback Mitchell Sanford, who took over for starting quarterback Collin Louviere after an injury.
Berwick had a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
However, Louviere got back in the game on Berwick’s next drive in the second quarter, which ended in a 2-yard touchdown run by Joshua Carver.
Berwick scored once more before halftime when Louviere threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Audwin Williams to put the Panthers up 20-0.
Berwick got the ball to start the third quarter, and Louviere again threw a touchdown pass to Williams, this time a 1-yard pass set up by a 35-yard catch by Williams several plays earlier.
After Berwick’s first possession of the second half, Louviere got to sit the rest of the night, finishing 9-of-17 passing for 176 yards with two touchdowns.
Sanford then threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Tysin Meads with 2:49 to play in the third quarter. Sanford was 5-for-5 passing for 92 yards with a rushing touchdown and touchdown pass in the game.
Williams caught nine passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns and “had a heck of a night,” Berwick coach Craig Brodie said.
Meads played in place of receiver Kenan Jones, who was out with an injury, and “did a great job catching the football,” Brodie said. Meads finished with four catches for 52 yards and one touchdown.
Berwick gained 20 first-downs Friday and held Haynes to six.
The Panthers had 403 yards of total offense, didn’t turn the ball over and punted just twice.
“I was just happy the way the kids prepared all week,” Brodie said.
Brodie also praised the performances of Louviere and Sanford.
The Panthers had several players injured, which made everybody else have to “play a little harder and make up for that loss,” Brodie said.
“It’s nice to have guys who can step up and take other people’s places and not really lose much,” Brodie said.
In the fourth quarter, Berwick extended its lead to 41-0 after a Joshua Jones 2-yard touchdown run.
The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard with just 40 seconds left in the game when quarterback Charles Magaw ran the ball in 2 yards for a touchdown.
The Panthers planned and executed well offensively and defensively against Haynes, Brodie said.
“Any time we match up with somebody physically like we did tonight, we have a good chance to win because we have some good athletes,” Brodie said.
Getting some younger players into the game, who normally don’t see playing time, was fun, Brodie said.
“It’s usually on the other end where they (the other team) put young kids in, so we get to put young kids in because (we) got the big lead,” Brodie said.
Haynes Academy coach Paul Longo said Berwick played “extremely well” and “got after us every play.” Haynes didn’t execute the way it needed to, and the Yellow Jackets may have had “a little bit of a hangover game from last week being a big game,” Longo said.
“I don’t think they were as focused as we needed to be tonight,” Longo said.
The Yellow Jackets’ last two games of the season are “huge” District 8-2A games, Longo said.
“It’s good to be taken out to the wood shed now and then right before two good district games,” Longo said. “It’s an eye-opening experience. We’re going to have to see how the kids respond.”
Longo said he was pleased on the Yellow Jackets’ last drive with Magaw “pulling the ball down on the bootleg, running for the touchdown,” doing something he hadn’t done before.
A couple Haynes’ young defensive players “stepped up” too, Longo said.
Brodie said he “couldn’t be more proud” of the Panthers after Friday’s win.
“We’re in a situation where we felt like we had to win two of the last three games to get in the playoffs. We’re sitting on the bubble right now. And this is going to help us in our power points,” Brodie said of defeating Haynes Academy.
The Panthers’ last two opponents, E.D. White and North Vermilion, both will be tough, so Berwick has to prepare accordingly, Brodie said.
“We feel like we’ve got to win one of the two, but why not both of them?” Brodie said.
“I like the way the kids are responding right now,” he said. “They’re excited. That’s our third win this year. That’s the most wins we’ve had in one season since I’ve been here,” Brodie said.
“It’s a great thing for the program, and we’ve got a really good group of young guys. ... The future of Berwick football is looking pretty good.”
