Berwick Panthers rout Ellender, 19-1

BERWICK — The Berwick Panthers opened their Panther Classic with a bang as they rolled past Ellender, 19-1, in five innings Thursday.
Berwick plated runs in every inning except the fifth, taking a 10-0 lead after three innings and a 19-1 lead after the fourth.
Berwick had just seven hits in the blowout win but also benefitted from nine Ellender errors.
Brannon Melancon earned the win. In four innings, he surrendered a run on four hits with three walks and fanned eight.
Cameron Wiley pitched an inning of relief and walked one and fanned one.
At the plate, Bobby Boudreaux led the Panthers with a 2-for-2 performance with two doubles and four RBIs, while Nick Duthu was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Other top contributors included Neal Theriot, 1-for-3, two RBIs; and Justin Morvant and Brandon Hampton, each 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Berwick (3-2) will return to action today at its tournament when it plays Morgan City in a 7:30 p.m. contest in the nightcap of today’s action.
Central Catholic
edges Loreauville
Central Catholic edged Loreauville, 3-2, at Hanson Memorial’s tournament Thursday.
While Loreauville plated a run in the first, Central Catholic countered with three in the top of the third. Loreauville concluded the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
Samuel Guarisco earned the complete-game victory. In seven innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on nine hits with four walks and fanned seven.
Matthew Barbier finished 2-for-2 with a double and a run for Central Catholic, while Barron Courtney was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Charlie Barron, 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Loreauville outhit Central Catholic 10-7 but left eight runners on base.
The Eagles (4-0) will continue play in the tournament today with a 6 p.m. contest against Livonia at Acadian Ballpark in New Iberia.
Patterson defeats
Highland Baptist
Patterson plated runs in the first five innings and overcame six errors to defeat Highland Baptist, 13-7.
While Highland Baptist took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, Patterson took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with four runs.
The Lumberjacks scored two more runs in the second and four more in the third to take a 10-2 lead after three innings.
While Highland Baptist plated three runs in the top of the fourth, Patterson got all three back in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings for a 13-5 lead.
Highland Baptist plated its final two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
“It was great to get another win, but I don’t believe the defensive effort we put forth (Thursday) would give us an opportunity to win many games,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said. “You just can’t expect to win at a high level when you struggle making routine throws in the infield. We are better than what we showed (Thursday) and I hope (Friday) brings out a better effort.”
Sirbatian Charles earned the win. In six innings, he surrendered five runs — two earned — on five hits with four walks and fanned two.
Charles and reliever Jake Lagrange, who pitched an inning, combined to surrender just five hits to Highland Baptist.
On offense, the Lumberjacks pounded out 12 hits in the win.
Spencer Landry led the Lumberjacks with a 4-for-5 performance with two RBIs and two runs, while Sean Stewart was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Other top contributors included Charles, 2-for-2, two RBIs; Joel Singleton, 1-for-3, three RBIs and a run; and Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-4, three RBIs and a run.
“Offensively, I thought we made progress,” Jensen said. “We had some … guys get hits with runners in scoring position, which has been a struggle so far this season. It’s a long season, and our young team needs to keep maturing.”
Patterson (4-1) will return to action today at 3:30 p.m. in the tournament vs. Delcambre.
