Berwick, Patterson qualify competitors for state meet

The Berwick High School Panthers qualified competitors in seven events and placed third in team scoring at the Class 3A Region II track and field meet at Abbeville High School Thursday.
The Panthers were led by Kenan Jones, who won the long jump and triple jump and placed third in the high jump. Jones, who qualified for the state meet in all three events, was named the meet’s Outstanding Performer.
In the triple jump, Jones broke his previous school record of 45 feet, 9 inches with a leap of Thursday of 46 feet, 0.5 inches.
Meanwhile, he won the high jump with a lap of 22 feet, 2.75 inches and finished third in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches.
Other Panthers who qualified for the state meet in individual events were Tyus Jones, Ian Valdez and Orry Arcemont. Jones finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.64, while Valdez was second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:27.60. Arcemont finished third in the Javelin with a toss of 159 feet, 6.5 inches.
The Panthers also qualified their 4x400-meter relay, which finished third in regionals with a time of 3:33.42. The team consists of Alvin Jones, Larenz Clark, Tyus Jones and Barrett Hover.
Berwick totaled 62 points for a third-place finish, while Patterson finished 15th with 14 points.
The Lumberjacks qualified their 4x400-meter relay, which placed second in district with a time of 3:32.43. The team consists of Ian Hayes, Anthony Gant, Desabrian Benjamin and Dylan Giandelone.
While neither Patterson nor Berwick qualified any competitors on the girls side for state competition, Patterson finished the meet in 14th place in team scoring with four points, while Berwick was 16th with a point.
