Berwick run-rules Assumption, 12-2, in six innings Thursday

Berwick High School run-ruled Assumption, 12-2, in six innings in its season opener in Berwick Thursday.
The Lady Panthers plated five runs in the first, three in the second and one more in the third for an 8-0 lead.
Assumption, a Class 4A quarterfinalist in 2015, plated a run in the top of the fourth and Berwick responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The visitors cut their deficit to 10-2 in the top of the sixth, but Berwick ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Berwick got outhit 8-7 in the game, but Assumption committed nine errors, while the Lady Panthers had two.
Sydney Aucoin earned the win for Berwick. In five innings, she surrendered one unearned run on five hits and fanned four.
Jordan Lipari pitched an inning and surrendered an earned run on three hits and fanned one.
Offensively, Madelyn Gros led Berwick with a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and two runs, while Madeleine Hover was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Other top contributors included Rosalyn Gros, 1-for-3, an RBI; Lipari, 1-for-4, a double, two runs; and Mary Jordan Melancon, 1-for-4, a double and a run.
Berwick (1-0) will return to action Saturday when it travels to face Ascension Catholic, a Class 1A quarterfinalist a year ago. The game is a makeup from Tuesday’s season opener for Berwick. However, instead of being played in Berwick, the game now will be played in Donaldsonville. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
CCHS opens
season with win
Central Catholic, the defending Class 1A state champion, opened its season with a 9-3 victory against Westgate in Bayou Vista Friday.
Central Catholic never trailed, taking a 4-0 lead after an inning and a 5-0 lead after four innings of play.
While Westgate cut its deficit to 5-3 after the top of the fifth, Central Catholic responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame for the eventual 9-3 final.
Hallie Autin led the Lady Eagles’ offense with a 2-for-3 performance with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs. Other top contributors included Taylor Picou, 2-for-3, two runs; Emma Aucoin, 1-for-3, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Brooke Lipari, 1-for-3, a double, a stolen base and a run; Tori Estay, 1-for-3, a double and a run; and McDaniels, an RBI.
On the mound, Sarah Thomas earned the win. In 5.1 innings, she surrendered three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Cameron McDaniels pitched 0.1 innings and fanned one, while Ava Nicar tossed 1.1 innings and allowed one hit.
Central Catholic (1-0) will return to action this weekend when it takes part in Terrebonne’s tournament. The Lady Eagles will face Assumption at 7 p.m. today and on Saturday, Ursuline at 10:30 a.m. and Vandebilt at 12:30 p.m. Assumption was a Class 4A quarterfinalist in 2015.
Lutcher edges
Morgan City
While Lutcher led 1-0 after two innings, Morgan City took the lead in the top of the third with two runs.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Lutcher pushed across two runs.
Morgan City was limited to one hit in the game, a Kennedy Hebert single.
While Hebert limited Lutcher to just three hits, Morgan City’s defense committed five errors.
Hebert tossed six innings and surrendered three unearned runs on three hits with nine strikeouts.
Offensively, she finished 1-for-3.
Morgan City (1-1) will return to action this weekend when it participates in the Terrebonne tournament. The Lady Tigers will meet Terrebonne today at 3 p.m., and on Saturday, Central Lafourche at 10 a.m. and Archbishop Chappelle at noon.
Patterson falls to
Central Lafourche
Patterson dropped its season opener to Central Lafourche, 9-8, on the road Thursday.
Patterson was led offensively by Kara Lawrence, who finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and two runs. She was just a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Other top hitters included Madison Paul, 3-for-4, two runs and two RBIs; Emmeli Smith, 2-for-4, a double, an RBI and a run; Cayla Wiggins, 1-for-2, a double and a run; Makayla Knight, 1-for-3, a double and two runs.
Tapanga Haven suffered the loss for Patterson as she walked four and fanned five.
Patterson (0-1) will return to action this weekend when it competes in Terrebonne’s tournament. Patterson will play today at 7 p.m. against South Terrebonne. On Saturday, the squad will play Ellender at 10:30 a.m. and H.L. Bourgeois at 2:30 p.m.
