Berwick High School had a tough time in its scrimmage against Catholic High-New Iberia Friday as the Panthers were limited to a second-team touchdown and surrendered three first-team scores to Catholic High.
While Berwick didn’t reach the end zone with its first team, they did have some success as Joshua Carver ran 35 yards on Berwick’s first offensive play of the scrimmage, while the Panthers got the ball down to the 1-yard line on its opening drive but couldn’t punch it in.
Also on offense, Audwin Williams recorded two catches for about 80 yards.
Berwick faced some adversity up front as Brodie said two of their starting offensive linemen didn’t play due to injuries and the Brodie said the Panthers’ center went down with an injury.
While Brodie said their replacements did well, he said the injuries limited what the Panthers could do.
Berwick’s touchdown came on a 60-yard pass from Mitchell Sanford to Beau Boudreaux in second-team action.
Defensively, the Panthers got work against Catholic High-New Iberia’s Wing T.
“I thought we got a lot out of it,” Brodie said of the scrimmage.
The move to play the defending state runner-up was by design as Berwick will be facing Wing T teams in the next two weeks in Covenant Christian Friday in the Morgan City High School Jamboree as well as the first week of the season against Morgan City.
“I think Catholic High is probably the best Wing T team in the state, for sure. … It was a good experience for us,” Brodie said.
Brodie said they will have to improve more on concentrating on their reads on defense in defending the Wing T as the continue to prepare for the jamboree and the season opener.
The scrimmage featured two 12-play blocks for the first team, two 10-play blocks for the second unit and two eight-play blocks for the third teams.
As for Friday’s jamboree game, Brodie said presale tickets are available at Berwick High School and can be purchased at a discounted rate of $5 through Friday.
Brodie encouraged fans to buy their tickets at the school as all proceeds from the presale tickets will go to the school.
