The Berwick High School football team gave Coach Eric Holden the perfect birthday gift Friday: a 28-0 victory against Haynes Academy at Muss Bertolino Stadium.
Even more impressive than the shutout was that the Berwick defense limited Haynes to just 75 yards of offense (53 rushing and 22 passing). Berwick also picked off Haynes quarterback Charles Magaw four times.
The loss was the first this season for Haynes, which came into the contest with a 7-0 record.
Offensively, Berwick totaled 297 yards of offense (103 rushing and 194 passing).
“Guys bounced back,” Holden said of the win. “Our kicking game was incredible. He (John McCorkle) did a great job kicking. We just had a really great week of practice. We came back and regrouped and refocused, and we really wanted to finish the season strong.”
He said finishing the season strong started with a win at Haynes.
Quarterback Collin Louviere completed 9 of 20 passes for 89 yards with one touchdown. He also rushed 9 times for 37 yards
Mitchell Sanford also completed 7 of 13 passes for 105 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Josh Carver led the team’s receivers with six catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, while Kenan Jones had six receptions for 62 yards.
Josh Jones had three catches for 38 yards and a score and also rushed for another touchdown.
Berwick took a 7-0 lead after Louviere connected with Carver on a 6-yard pass with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter.
The Panthers added another touchdown with 9:05 remaining in the second quarter when Larenz Clark scooped up the football on a punt return and brought it back 83 yards for a touchdown.
McCorkle, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra point attempts, converted his second of the night for a 14-0 Berwick lead.
While the Panthers were stopped at the Haynes 2 yard line on fourth down on their next possession, they made up for the empty possession quickly as D.J. Robicheaux intercepted Magaw three plays later.
With the ball at the Haynes 12, Berwick needed just three plays to score as Josh Jones cross the goal line from 1 yard out with 2:55 remaining in the first half for a 21-0 Berwick lead.
Berwick scored the game’s final touchdown in the third quarter on its second possession when Sanford connected with Josh Jones on screen pass that Jones took to the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
While the Panthers were penalized for excessive celebration after the play, McCorkle was able to convert the extra point from 28 yards away.
With Friday’s win, Berwick improves to 6-2 overall. The Panthers, who are 2-2 in District 8-3A action, will return to league play Friday when it travels to take on E.D. White.
