Berwick struggles in New Iberia

The Berwick Lady Panthers finished the weekend 0-4 at New Iberia’s tournament but faced quality competition.
The Lady Panthers fell to Teurlings Catholic (10-25, 16-25), East Ascension (13-25, 25-23, 6-15), Comeaux (18-25, 14-25) and Breaux Bridge (22-25, 15-25).
According to the latest unofficial power rankings, Comeaux is ranked fourth, while East Ascension is the fifth-ranked squad, both in Division 1. Breaux Bridge is Division 2’s fourth-ranked squad, while Teurlings is Division 3’s top-ranked squad.
Against Teurlings, Brie Hill led the Lady Panthers with two kills, one block, one assist and seven digs, while Ashton Morales had two kills, three assists and six digs.
Other top contributors included Diana Grace Guarisco, one ace, one kill and two digs; and Hannah Carpenter, 11 digs.
In the loss to East Ascension, Hill had one ace, six kills, three blocks, one assist and six digs; Morales, three kills, 17 assists and eight digs; Carpenter, two aces and 20 digs; and Abigail Askew, 10 kills.
Other top contributors included Maddie Gray, four kills and five digs; Rennen Delatte, five digs; and Guarisco, one ace, two assists and six digs.
Guarisco had one ace, two kills and 11 digs in the Lady Panthers’ loss to Comeaux; Hill, one ace, six kills, two blocks and four digs; and Carpenter, 15 digs.
Other top contributors included Morales, one kill, eight assists and five digs; and Delatte, one ace, one assist and two digs.
Against Breaux Bridge, Morales recorded three kills, 11 assists and 12 digs; Hill, seven kills, one block and six digs; and Carpenter, 19 digs.
Other top contributors included Gray, one ace, two kills and four digs; and Guarisco, three kills and eight digs.
On Thursday, the Lady Panthers defeated Donaldsonville in Division 3, District 6 play at home, 25-7, 25-18, 25-5.
Hill had three aces, 10 kills, one block, one assist and six digs to lead the Lady Panthers, while Morales had three kills, 13 assists and 13 digs.
Other top contributors included Carpenter, seven aces and 10 digs; and Askew, six kills, one block and one dig.
In junior varsity action, Berwick won 25-7, 25-18, 25-5.
Berwick (13-12 overall, 4-2 in district) will return to action today when it hosts Lutcher in Division 3, District 6 action, with junior varsity action set for a 4:30 p.m. start and varsity play to follow at 5:30 p.m. Both Berwick and Lutcher are tied for second place in district.
Central Catholic tops
Assumption
In a matchup of pupil versus teacher Saturday, the former got the best of the latter.
Central Catholic defeated Assumption in three tightly contested sets Saturday in Napoleonville in a homecoming for head coach Latashia Wise and assistant coach Janelle Leonard, who both played high school ball for Assumption’s Sandy Fussell.
The win was the first-ever for the former players against their coach.
Saturday, the Lady Eagles won 28-26, 27-25, 25-22 for their 12th consecutive win.
Meo Knight recorded 22 kills, 12 digs and four solo blocks for the Lady Eagles; Kaitlyn Gros, 34 assists and 12 digs; and Megan Landry and Olivia Crawford each contributed 15 digs.
The Lady Eagles totaled 76 digs in the contest.
On Thursday, Central Catholic defeated Ascension Catholic, 25-16, 25-10, 25-19.
Knight had 18 kills and four solo blocks for the Lady Eagles, while Gee Garrett had nine kills and Gros, 28 assists.
Other top contributors included Crawford, two aces and six digs; and Landry, seven digs.
Central Catholic (24-8, 3-0) will travel to Houma Christian today for Division 5, District 6 action.
A win today against Houma Christian, currently in second place in the district standings with a 2-1 mark, would give the Lady Eagles at least a share of the district title.
Elsewhere, Morgan City will return to action today when it hosts league-leading E.D. White in Division 3, District 6 play. Freshmen action is set for a 3:30 p.m. start, with junior varsity and varsity play to follow.
Patterson will travel to Donaldsonville today for Division 3, District 6 action, beginning at 4 p.m.
