Cardinal Lumber defeated Skipper’s Sporting Goods 6-3 in opening night Swampland Baseball League action at Tiger Diamond Monday.
While the game counts as a win for the Patterson High-based squad, it was called due to lightning and rain in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Cardinal Lumber scored a run in the first and another in the second for a 2-0 advantage.
Morgan City High-based Skippers came back with a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
Cardinal Lumber erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth for the final margin.
Cardinal Lumber coach Ryan Jensen said the win was a good team victory, noting he thought the team hit the ball well for the first game of the summer season.
Cardinal Lumber outhit Skipper’s 10-5.
Brennan Gouaux and Lukas Carnley led the Patterson offense. Gouaux finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs, while Carnley was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Other top offensive contributors included John Brooks, 1-for-3, a triple and an RBI; and Bryce Beaubouef, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run.
Jamey Fabre earned the win in relief. In two innings, he surrendered just one walk.
Gouaux started the game and pitched three innings. He surrendered three runs — two earned — on five hits with four walks and fanned one.
“We were a little rusty defensively and on the mound,” Jensen said. “I’m hoping it all comes together as we get back into the flow of things.”
For Skipper’s, Philip Hutchinson led the team with two hits and an RBI, while Scottie Comeaux had a hit and two runs.
Cardinal Lumber (1-0) will return to action Wednesday when it faces Skipper’s (0-1) again at Patterson High. Junior varsity action will begin at 5 p.m. with varsity set to follow at 7 p.m.
Taco Bell routs
Crawdaddy’s Seafood
Taco Bell (Berwick High) pounded Crawdaddy’s Seafood (Houma Christian) 13-4 in Swampland Baseball League action Monday.
While Crawdaddy’s struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Taco Bell responded with at least a run in every inning, including a nine-run fourth inning, to take a commanding 12-2 lead.
Crawdaddy’s came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth before Taco Bell countered with another run in the top of the fifth.
The game was called after five innings due to darkness.
Taco Bell head coach Mike Thomas said he thought his team played well and was pleased with their effort.
Taco Bell outhit Crawdaddy’s 15-4.
Cody Roberie led the Panthers with a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles and two RBIs.
Other top offensive contributors included Brandon Fryou, 3-for-4, a double; Bradley Gray, 2-for-4, two doubles, three RBIs; Logan Angeron, 2-for-3, a double, two RBIs; Ryan Hover, 1-for-1, two RBIs; Andrew Askew and Austin Price, each 1-for-2 with an RBI; and Kyle Pitre, 1-for-3, a double.
Taco Bell (1-0) will return to action today when it hosts Crawdaddy’s (0-1) again at Berwick High.
Junior varsity action is set for 5 p.m. with varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
Halimar Shipyard
rained out
Halimar Shipyard’s contest at BCG Services Monday was rained out.
The teams are scheduled to meet again today in Amelia.
The meeting will mark a matchup of two Class 1A semifinalists from this spring.
