Catholic High shocks Archbishop Rummel 31-28

By DAVID FOLSE II, Associated Press

Parker Fontenot’s 34-yard field goal on the last play of the game gave Catholic High a 31-28 victory against Archbishop Rummel in the Louisiana Division I state championship game Friday night.
After Aaron Moffit recovered a fumble inside Rummel territory, the Bears drove down to the 17 and Fontenot nailed the 34-yarder to give Catholic High its first-ever football state championship.
“I just tried to line it up and kick it like I did every day in practice,” Fontenot said. “Right when it hit my foot I knew it was going through and the title was ours.”
After a scoreless third quarter, Archbishop Rummel drove the ball to the Catholic High 29. Facing a fourth-and-8, Chase Fourcade eluded a Bears defender and found a wide open David Hensley for a 29-yard touchdown to give Archbishop Rummel the lead, 21-14.
Catholic High answered on their ensuing possession when Ian Brian connected with Blair Bogan for a 54-yard touchdown to make it 21-all.
After the Bears strip-sacked Fourcade and recovered the fumble, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored from 12 yards to give the Bears the lead at 28-21.
Rummel answered yet again as Fourcade connected with Hensley a third time, this time from 64 yards out, to tie it at 28.
Archbishop Rummel got on the scoreboard first when Fourcade found Hensley for a 48-yard touchdown.
The Bears answered with a 78-yard touchdown run by Edwards-Helaire and took a 14-7 lead when Brian found Ben Miles for a 10-yard touchdown.
The Raiders’ second blocked punt of the game late in the second quarter led to an 8-yard touchdown run by Maurice Bailey to tie the game at 14.
Late TD gives
Parkview Baptist title
Reggie Hayes’ 37-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Ruffin with less than two minutes remaining proved to be the game winner as Parkview Baptist defeated St. Thomas More 24-21 in the Louisiana Division II state championship game Friday night.
Hayes drove the Eagles (10-3) down the field and Ruffin took a short pass and raced to the end zone for the lead.
Caleb Meaux sealed the victory for the Eagles with an interception of William Bellamy’s pass.
The Cougars (10-3) took a 21-17 lead when Bellamy connected with Gabe LeBouef for a 37-yard touchdown pass, capping an eight-play, 91-yard drive.
Parkview Baptist’s Connor Joffrion ran 2 yards to give Parkview Baptist a 17-14 lead.
Notre Dame beats
Riverside for Division III title
Scoring 13 points in the final 18 seconds of the first half was enough for Notre Dame to defeat Riverside Academy, 13-3, and capture the Louisiana Division III state championship Friday.
Trailing 3-0 after a Tyler Gauthier 41-yard field goal, Notre Dame (14-0) wide receiver Adam Berken connected with Boedy Borill, another wide receiver, for a 55-yard reception to move the ball to the Riverside five-yard line.
After a Riverside penalty, quarterback Joe Faulk found tight end Ethan Smith for a three-yard touchdown.
Recovering a Riverside Academy (11-2) fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Faulk found Borill for a 28-yard touchdown to make it 13-3 Pioneers.
The Notre Dame defense won the game for the Pioneers, holding Riverside’s offense — which had scored over 30 points their last nine games — to a single field goal and only 138 yards of total offense.
The championship for Notre Dame is the third in school history and first since the 2009 season.
Southern Lab wins
Division IV state title
Breaking out to an early 28-0 first-half lead, the Southern Lab Kittens captured the Division IV high school state championship Friday with a 36-2 win against St. Mary’s.
A rematch between two teams that played for the Class 1A state championship back in 1980, Southern Lab took an early 6-0 lead on Curtlan Williams’ 45-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Darbbeon Profit would score later in the first quarter from nine yards out to extend the lead to 12-0.
Senior quarterback Bladrick Veal added two long touchdown passes to put the game out of reach at 28-0; connecting with Williams for a 45-yard touchdown and Xavier Bell for 70 yards.
Scoring two touchdowns in the game, Williams was named the Most Outstanding Player for Southern Lab.
The title for the Kittens (10-3) is their first state championship since 1996, while St. Mary’s (13-1) suffered their first loss of the season.
