CCHS eases by Gueydan, 40-24
Central Catholic eased past Gueydan, 40-24, in a homecoming victory that also was a District 7-1A contest in Morgan City Friday.
Central Catholic scored touchdowns on its first six offensive drives to race out to a 40-0 lead in the third quarter.
Gueydan scored off of its points in the last 6:35 of the contest against the Central Catholic reserves.
The win was the fifth straight for Central Catholic and sets up a week 10 showdown at top-ranked Ascension Episcopal for the district title. Ascension Episcopal already has clinched a share of the crown with a victory against Lafayette Christian in Week 9 and can claim the title outright with a win. Central Catholic can claim a share and help its playoff seeding with a victory Friday against the Blue Gators.
Against Gueydan, Central Catholic totaled 341 yards of offense (194 rushing and 147 passing).
Chris Singleton led the ground game with six carries for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Bailey Badeaux had five carries for 54 yards and a score and Greg Leger had a 58-yard touchdown run.
Blake Byrne completed 5 of 6 passes for 135 yards and two scores.
His top receiver was Samarick Paul, who had four catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Blake Hidalgo also had a 9-yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, Central Catholic held Gueydan to 77 yards of offense (67 rushing and 10 passing).
While Central Catholic stopped Gueydan after it gained a first down on its first possession, the Eagles gave the ball back to the Bears at the Central Catholic 22 following a muffed punt.
However, Central Catholic stopped Gueydan from doing any damage and took over at its own 25.
From there, it took the Eagles just five plays to reach the end zone as the drive ended when Hidalgo caught a pass while sliding to the ground from Byrne for the 9-yard score with 2:49 remaining in the opening quarter.
Drake Angeron, who was 4 of 6 on extra point attempts, converted his first of the night for a 7-0 Central Catholic lead.
The key play on the opening touchdown drive was a 47-yard completion from Byrne to Paul down to the Gueydan 9.
Central Catholic began its next drive at the Central Catholic 41 after a Jalen Johnson interception.
The Eagles capitalized on the turnover with a Badeaux 7-yard run with 10:54 remaining in the second quarter for a 13-0 Central Catholic lead.
Paul again set up the touchdown with a 37-yard reception down to the Gueydan 7.
Central Catholic added three more first-half touchdowns via a Singleton 1-yard run with 7:23 remaining, a Leger 58-yard run with 4:33 left and a Byrne 1-yard pass to Paul with 1 minute left in the half.
The Eagles scored on their opening drive on a Singleton 29-yard run with 10:47 remaining in the third quarter for the Eagles’ final points.
Gueydan scored its three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The first score came at the 6:35 mark when Blair Broussard capped a drive with a 1-yard run. Broussard’s two-point run was good for a 40-8 Central Catholic advantage.
The Bears quickly got the ball back at the Central Catholic 19 after an Eagles fumble on the first offensive play of their next drive.
Gueydan cashed in one play later on a Mark Clark 19-yard run. The two-point conversion cut the Central Catholic lead to 40-16 with 2:46 remaining.
The Bears ended the game on a positive note when Holden Guidry picked off a pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown with no time remaining. The two-point conversion was good for a 40-24 final.
