Patterson goes 0-2
this weekend
The Patterson Lumberjacks finished 0-2 this weekend at the Tri-City Baseball Classic, falling 7-2 to Bunkie Friday and 9-0 to Covenant Christian Saturday in action played in Patterson.
In Friday’s loss, Bunkie scored one run in the third before plating four more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
Patterson countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth to cut its deficit to 5-2.
However, Bunkie scored two more runs in its final at-bat for the final margin.
“We were really never able to get anything going against their pitcher,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said of Bunkie’s Jacob Boatner. “You have to tip your cap to him; it was just his night. I thought (we) were way too passive at the plate and never seemed to get comfortable. A couple errors really allowed them to distance themselves from us. A play here and there and we could have had a shot at the end.”
Boatner, who earned the win, tossed six innings and surrendered two runs — one earned — on four hits with two walks and fanned nine.
Joel Singleton finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run to lead Patterson, while Blake Dryer also was 1-for-3 with a double.
Sirbatian Charles suffered the loss for Patterson. In 4.1 innings, he surrendered five runs — one earned — on six hits with one walk and fanned eight. He also hit two batters.
In 2.2 innings of relief, Lukas Carnley surrendered two earned runs on two hits with one walk and fanned three.
Of the eight hits Patterson surrendered, five were doubles.
On Saturday, Patterson was limited to just three hits in its loss to Covenant Christian.
While Covenant Christian led just 1-0 after three innings, the Lions plated six runs in the fourth and added one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings for the blowout win.
Even in the dominant win, the Lions left 10 runners on base.
“Once again we just never got on track offensively,” Jensen said. “The offense is usually a little bit behind the defense at the beginning of the season, but I did not expect what I’ve seen. We have to find a way to generate more fire power. I thought our at-bats were better but still not able to produce anything.”
However, Jensen said his squad is just in its third game of the season and has plenty of time to improve and turn things around.
Offensively in Saturday’s game, Charles finished 1-for-1, while Tyrik Singleton and Matt Dardeau each finished 1-for-2.
On the mound, Patterson pitchers had a rough night with five hit batsmen.
Bryce Beaubouef took the loss for Patterson. In three innings, he surrendered seven earned runs on five hits with three walks, one strikeout and two hit batters.
Among Patterson’s relievers, Joel Singleton tossed three innings and surrendered two earned runs on five hits with one walk and fanned five.
The Lumberjacks (1-2) will return to action Tuesday when they host Beau Chene. The game has been moved up to 4 p.m. due to the Patterson boys basketball team’s Class 3A regional round playoff game set for 7 p.m.
