No. 3 Central Catholic will look to advance to its third straight Class 1A semifinals when it hosts No. 11 seed St. Mary’s School in Amelia Saturday at 6 p.m.
St. Mary’s, which is from Natchitoches, advanced to the round of eight after upsetting No. 6 seed Covenant Christian, 8-5, in Houma Wednesday.
Central Catholic advanced after beating No. 19 seed St. Edmund 12-2 in six innings Tuesday in Eunice. The regional round rout for the Eagles was their second in as many playoff games after shutting out False River 11-0 in the first round.
St. Mary’s advanced to the second round after defeating No. 22 seed Delhi Charter 11-0 in six innings.
Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said it’s nice to be home for the quarterfinals in 2014 after having to play on the road and defeat Oak Grove a year ago.
“We’re expecting a big crowd, just a big atmosphere,” he said.
As for St. Mary’s, who he saw play Covenant Christian Wednesday, Jensen said they remind him of the Eagles’ squad two years ago.
“Their guys don’t do a whole lot to beat themselves,” Jensen said. “They do a really good job of making routing plays and doing the little things correctly. They have a lot of team speed.”
He said when watching them, the first thing that stuck out to him was they are well coached. Their pitcher Wednesday night, Jensen said was a “real competitor.”
“He just battles,” Jensen said.
Jensen called them a “dangerous” baseball team.
Admission to Saturday’s game will be $9.
The game will be broadcast on KBZE 105.9 FM and KFRA 1390 AM.
