CCHS plates five in final at bat for win
Central Catholic scored five runs in the first six innings of their District 7-1A contest with Hanson Memorial on Thursday.
With their backs against the wall and staring down a possible second district loss in three games, the Eagles rallied in their final at bat with five more runs for a dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind win against Hanson.
Central Catholic loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh after Stefano Guarisco walked, Sage Thibodaux doubled and TJ Ruffin was hit by a pitch.
The Eagles plated a run on Samuel Guarisco’s groundout, while the bases were loaded again after Matthew Barbier walked.
The next batter, Barron Courtney, cleared the bases with a double to knot the score at 9.
After the Eagles loaded the bases again following consecutive walks to Charlie Barron and Bryson Barbier loaded the bases.
An error by Cameron Stovall on a ball put in play by Nick Case allowed the winning run to score.
Hanson committed six errors in the contest.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and while Central Catholic plated two runs in the bottom of the third, Hanson extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth.
Central Catholic took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth before Hanson scored the next five runs — four in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 9-5 lead.
Bryson Barbier earned the win in relief for the Eagles. In four innings, he surrendered six runs — five earned — on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Samuel Guarisco started for the Eagles and in three innings, he surrendered three runs — two earned — on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Noah Judice pitched 0.1 innings and surrendered two earned runs on a hit with three walks to take the loss for Hanson.
John Guienze pitched the first six innings and surrendered six runs — three earned — on six hits with four walks and fanned two.
Barron Courtney led the Eagles with a 2-for-5 performance with a double, four RBIs and three runs, while Nick Case was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Stoval led Hanson with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, an RBI and two runs, while Luke Lancon was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.
Other top contributors included Jacob Hebert, 2-for-4 a home run, two RBIs and a run; Luke Rodriguez was 2-for-4, a home run, an RBI and a run; Bryce Ronsonet was 1-for-1, a double, two RBIs and a run; and John Guienze was 1-for-2 with two RBIs .
Hanson outhit Central Catholic 14-8, while Central Catholic left 13 on base. Hanson stranded eight.
With the win, the Eagles guaranteed themselves no worse than a share of the District 7-1A title. With a win in either of their final two games, they can clinch the outright district crown. The Eagles will return to action today when they travel to face Gueydan at 3 p.m. The game was moved up from its original Friday playing date.
Berwick beats Patterson
Berwick rebounded from an 8-7 extra-inning loss to Patterson Tuesday with a 5-0 win against Patterson Thursday.
Berwick scored three runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Berwick pitcher Daniel Gray was able to work out of some jams in the first three innings and went on to earn the complete-game victory.
In seven innings, he surrendered three hits, hit one batter, walked four and fanned seven.
He only allowed two base runners in the last four innings.
Nick Duthu led the Panthers with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, while Brooks Richard was 2-for-3 with a run, and Neal Theriot, 2-for-3, with a double.
Other top contributors included Bobby Boudreaux, 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs; and Gray, 1-for-3 with a double.
Patterson’s Kenny Singleton suffered the loss.
In six innings, he surrendered five runs — four earned — on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Spencer Landry led Patterson with a 2-for-3 performance.
Patterson (15-9 overall, 3-3 in district) will play Family Christian today at 4 p.m. Family Christian is the two-time defending Class C state champion.
Berwick (15-9 overall, 5-1) will return to action Tuesday when it faces E.D. White in District 9-3A action in Berwick. Junior varsity action is set for 4 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6 p.m.
Vandebilt Catholic

The Morgan City Tigers fell 10-0 to Vandebilt Catholic in six innings in Houma Thursday.
Vandebilt took a 5-0 lead after four innings before erupting for five more in the bottom of the sixth.
Brady Fryou led the Tigers with a 1-for-2 performance with a double.
Nick Spinella suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3-plus innings.
Morgan City (10-13 overall, 5-4 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Vandebilt. Junior varsity action is set for 4 p.m. with varsity to follow at 6 p.m.
