CCHS splits weekend games with Hanson, Country Day

Central Catholic had a mixed weekend with two blowouts — one they handed out and the other they were a victim of.
After rolling past Hanson, 83-41 on Friday in District 7-1A action in Morgan City, the Eagles fell at Metairie Park Country Day Saturday, 78-44. Country Day, the defending state champion, came into the game ranked No. 3 in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s latest unofficial Class 1A power rankings.
Stefano Guarisco led the Eagles with 14 points, while Jalen Johnson added 11.
J.C. Younger led the Cajuns with 17 points, while Kent McGuire added 15 and 6-foot, 9-inch ULL signee Scott Plaisance also reached double figures with 13 points, according to nola.com
In Friday’s win, the Eagles jumped out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and led 41-11 at halftime and 64-26 after three quarters.
Central Catholic connected on six 3-pointers in the win, while Hanson had five.
Cedric Gant led the Eagles with 19 points, while Nicholas Case added 17 and Guarisco, 11. Other top scorers included Samarick Paul and Tyler Hoffpauir, seven each; Johnson, six; T.J. Ruffin, four; and Tanner Wiggins and Garret LeBlanc, three.
In junior varsity action, Central Catholic defeated Hanson 51-11.
Matt Vorenkamp led the Eagles with 17 points.
Central Catholic will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face Ascension Episcopal in a District 7-1A contest set for 7:30 p.m.
Patterson tops
Vandebilt Catholic
The Patterson Lumberjacks defeated Vandebilt Catholic in Houma Friday, 49-46.
No individual statistics were available.
Patterson will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Donaldsonville in a huge District 9-3A matchup at home at 7 p.m. Donaldsonville is undefeated in district with a 5-0 mark, including a slim 44-43 win against Patterson in Donaldsonville last month.
With a win, Donaldsonville would gain a sizable lead in the district race as everyone else in district would have at least two losses.
Ellender routs
Morgan City
The Ellender Patriots rolled past Morgan City High School, 107-56, in District 7-4A action Friday in Houma, according to www.bayoupreps.com.
The Patriots took a 39-17 lead after one period of play and extended it to 50-23 at the half and 79-44 after three quarters.
Ellender finished an impressive 17-of-30 from 3-point range.
No individual statistics were available for Morgan City.
Morgan City will return to action Tuesday when it hosts South Terrebonne in District 7-4A action at 7 p.m. During halftime, Morgan City’s Darryl Johnson will hold his signing ceremony. Johnson already inked with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette last week to continue his football playing career.
Berwick falls at Franklin
The Berwick Panthers fell to Franklin, 95-63, in District 9-3A action at Franklin Friday.
The Panthers will return to action Friday when they travel to face Donaldsonville in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Lady Eagles clinch share
of district crown
The Central Catholic Lady Eagles clinched at least a share of the District 7-1A crown Friday with a 53-34 victory against Hanson.
While Central Catholic jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the first period and led 25-11 at halftime, Hanson outscored them 12-6 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 31-23 after three quarters.
The Lady Eagles responded in the fourth quarter with a 22-13 scoring advantage for the final.
Meo Knight led the Lady Eagles with a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds as well as six steals, two assists and two blocks, while Randi Brown added 15 points, two blocks, three steals, four assists and four rebounds.
Other top contributors included Megan Landry, eight points, four rebounds and one steal, and Gee Garrett, one point, one block, one steal, two assists and seven rebounds.
Central Catholic can claim the District 7-1A title Tuesday with a win against Ascension Episcopal. Tuesday’s game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Morgan City falls
to Ellender
Ellender raced out to a big first-quarter lead against Morgan City Friday in route to a 74-32 win in District 7-4A action in Houma Friday.
Ellender’s first-quarter scoring barrage included four 3- pointers. The Lady Patriots finished the game with eight treys.
The home team extended its lead to 44-14 at halftime and 61-24 after three quarters.
Casey Chenevert led the Lady Tigers with 20 points while Laqwajhia Bourgeois scored nine.
Morgan City will return to action Tuesday when it hosts South Terrebonne in a 6 p.m. contest.
The Lady Tigers, who entered Tuesday’s game ranked 28th according to the unofficial power rankings released prior to last week’s action, need a remain in the playoff picture.
Berwick falls
to Franklin
The Franklin Lady Hornets defeated Berwick, 56-9, in District 9-3A action Friday.
Franklin took a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and led 26-4 at halftime.
Iesha Jones led Berwick with five points.
Berwick will return to action Friday when it travels to face Donaldsonville in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
