CCHS will host St. Mary tonight

Central Catholic will be entering its second-round playoff game against St. Mary tonight on the heels of blowout victory against Logansport in round 1.
Still, that doesn’t mean the Lady Eagles have not had their share of adversity in the past few days.
Central Catholic, who lost one of its best players in guard and Alabama signee Meo Knight near the end of the first half Friday night, may not have her available for tonight’s contest, Central Catholic coach Jamarr Garrett said Sunday. He said it would be a game-time decision whether she plays or not after she injured herself on a shot attempt in which she and the defender both went up for a shot and Garrett said their knees collided.
“She’s feeling a little bit better … She’s progressing. I guess you could say,” Garrett said of Knight Sunday.
In just a half of play Thursday, Knight had a double-double with a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as well as six assists.
While Garrett said that the team was down early in practice about their fallen teammate, he said after a talk early on in practice, the Lady Eagles responded.
“At the end of practice Friday, I was satisfied,” Garrett said. “The girls made an adjustment.”
Garrett said the Lady Eagles have made adjustments, mostly on offense in case Knight can’t go, noting that Megan Landry, who has played forward, can handle the ball at guard.
Randi Brown, who along with Knight have teamed to lead the Lady Eagles this season, said that Landry and Garrett will be key components for the Lady Eagles tonight.
Garrett scored 14 points, including 10 of those in the second half of Thursday’s first-round win.
Brown led the Lady Eagles with a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds as well as seven assists.
Landry had seven points and five steals in the first-round win also.
As for today’s opponent, Jamarr Garret said St. Mary is a disciplined squad that reminds him of Vermilion Catholic.
“They have a real good coach,” Jamarr Garrett said. “He does a real good job with them. … They’re not going to speed the game up, which is total opposite of what Logansport did.”
The Central Catholic coach said the Lady Eagles can’t let St. Mary’s control the game.
“We have to take advantage of every opportunity we have, especially in transition, off the rebound, off turnovers,” he said. “We have to turn that into points.”
Jamarr Garrett said the Lady Tigers are led by Shelby Bishop, who is about 6 feet tall.
“I think if we can contain her inside and force those other girls to make shots, we’ll be ok,” he said.
The CCHS coach expects St. Mary to bring a large crowd tonight, too, as they said they will be bringing at least three busloads of people, including the team.
Admission to today’s game, which will begin at 6 p.m., is $7.
It will be broadcast on KBZE 105.9 FM and KFRA 1390 AM.
