Centerville boys, girls notch victories

MANSURA _ Marvin Strawder and Jaylon Williams combined for 30 points as the Centerville Bulldogs toppled Avoyelles Public Charter 55-41 to notch their first win of the season here Friday.
Centerville (1-13) outscored Avoyelles by a 14-10 advantage in the first quarter. Centerville erupted for a 24-10 cushion in the second period, taking a commanding 38-20 halftime cushion. The Bulldogs outscored Avoyelles 13-11 in the third quarter enroute to the 55-41 victory.
Centerville’s Marvin Strawder finished with 17 points while Jaylon Williams tossed in 13.
Rounding out the scoring for CHS were: Lance Howard, 9; Cole Candella, 8 points, 13 rebounds; Cameron Pogue, 6; and Desmond Monette, 1.
Beau Barbary tossed in 12 points to lead Avoyelles.
In girls action, the Centerville Lady Bulldogs earned a 54-51 victory over Avoyelles Public Charter.
Centerville went on a 9-2 run in the first quarter before Avoyelles benefited from a 17-5 second quarter advantage for a 19-14 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a 14-9 run in the third quarter before securing the 54-51 victory with an 11-8 flurry in the final period.
Kayla Robinson led the Centerville Lady Bulldogs with 13 points while Altria Austin, Roshayla Gunner and Nykeytra Kennedy all poured in 11 points apiece. Jasmine Gunner and Hailey McDaniel recorded four points each for the Lady Bulldogs.
Centerville will open district play at home on Tuesday at 5:15 with a pair of games.
