Centerville Bulldogs fall to Hanson Tigers 41-27
CENTERVILLE _ The Hanson Memorial Tigers rallied past the Centerville Bulldogs 41-27 Friday in District 7-A action at Bulldog Stadium.
Hanson Memorial (2-4, 1-2) built a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to its first league win of the season.
Hanson’s Luke Rodriguez grabbed a long touchdown pass from Mason Mendoza before Mendoza converted on the two-point conversion, giving the Hanson Memorial Tigers an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Brian Sonnier later hauled in a touchdown strike from Mendoza before Payton Trahan booted the extra-point, lifting Hanson Memorial to a 15-0 lead with 5:52 remaining on the clock in the first quarter.
Hanson Memorial quickly increased its lead to 21-0 when Luke Lancon scored on a 30-yard touchdown interception with 3:57 showing on the clock. Trahan added the point-after-touchdown, giving Hanson Memorial a huge 21-0 cushion.
Centerville (1-5, 0-3) trimmed Hanson Memorial’s lead to 21-7 late in the second quarter.
Centerville quarterback Gage Burgess scored on a one-yard plunge at the 4:29 mark of the second quarter.
Burgess, who completed 3 of 6 passes for 31 yards and two interceptions, fired a pair of passes to Matt Lebourgeois for 39 yards on the scoring drive.
On third and 7, Burgess tossed a 20-yard spiral to Lebourgeois. Three plays later, Burgess and Lebourgeois hooked up on a 19-yard pass completion, setting up the Bulldogs at the Tigers’ one.
On the next play, Burgess hit paydirt from one-yard out, helping the Bulldogs slice the Tigers’ lead to 21-6. Payton Nash booted the extra point and the Bulldogs trailed the Tigers by a 21-6 margin.
In the third quarter, Lebourgeois rumbled and stumbled his way for a 38-yard TD with 6:22 showing on the clock.

On the scoring drive, Lebourgeois shook off several would-be tacklers, scoring on a 38-yard scoring jaunt. With 6:22 showing on the clock, CHS cut Hanson Memorial’s lead to 21-14.
A short time later, Centerville’s leading rusher Noah Verrett made his presence known on an 75-yard touchdown which knottted the hart-fought contest at 21-21.
Verrett, who carried 16 times for 125 yards, went on a 75-yard TD with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter. Verrett brought the hometown crowd to its feet with a sensational 75-yard ramble for a touchdown. Nash booted the extra-point, helping the Bulldogs tie the game at 21-21.
On the ensuing kickoff, Centerville capitalized on a fumble recovery, taking a short-lived 27-21 advantage in the third quarter.
With 3:17 blinking on the clock in the third quarter, Verrett hit paydirt from 14 yards out giving Centerville a 27-21 advantage.
Less than two minutes later, the Hanson Memorial Tigers knotted the game at 27-27 when Mendoza found Srigley in the back of the end zone for a six-yard TD at the 1:43 mark of the third quarter.
Early in the fourth period, Hanson’s Sonnier scored on a 36-yard run, putting the Tigers ahead by a 33-27 margin with 10:56 remaining in the game.
Rodriguez added eight points on a touchdown and the two-point conversion, giving the Hanson Memorial Tigers the 41-27 victory over Centerville with 5:43 remaining in the game.
Hanson Memorial (2-4, 1-2) will travel to face Lafayette Christian (4-2, 2-1) on Friday while the Centerville Bulldogs (1-5, 0-3) will take to the road to take on Ascension Episcopal (6-0, 3-0) Friday in District 7-A action.
