Centerville opens district play with win over Gueydan
CENTERVILLE _ The Centerville Bulldogs opened District 7-1A action in grand style with an 81-44 triumph over the Gueydan Bears here Tuesday at the Centerville High School Gym.
With the win, Centerville improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in District 7-1A. The Bulldogs will travel to Central Catholic on Friday.
Centerville cruised to the easy victory from the outset, gaining an 18-8 lead in the opening quarter. Centerville led at the half by a commanding 41-15 edge at the half thanks to a 23-7 run. The Bulldogs kept the hot hand in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 62-28. CHS used a 19-16 lead in the final period to ice away the easy 81-44 league win.
Lance Howard led the Centerville High School balanced attack with 17 points while Marquis Strawder tossed in 16 with Jaylon Williams contributing 15 with Jackson Hebert collecting 14 and Deandre Kinchen adding 11. Jaqualon Bourgeois scored 5 points with Ryan Young adding 2 and Tykeith Joseph scoring 1.
On the night, Centerville went 11 of 20 from the charity stripe while committing 13 fouls.
Hebert led the Bulldogs with four 3 pointers while Howard, Kinchen, Bourgeois, and Williams all contributed at least one trey each.
Gueydan High School’s top scorers were: Holden Guidry, 12; Noah Boudreaux, 6; Bailey Istre, 6; Spence Boudreaux, 5; Alex Williams, 4; Matt Istre, 4; Dominic Touchet, 4; Matt Meaux, 2 and Griffin Guidry, 1.
Gueydan connected on 10 of 17 free throws with 13 fouls. Boudreaux, Williams and Guidry led the Bears in 3-pointers with two apiece while Istre tallied one trey.
GUEYDAN 67, CEN-TERVILLE 34
CENTERVILLE _ The Gueydan Honey Bears collected a 67-34 District 7-1A victory over the Centerville Lady Bulldogs here Tuesday at the CHS Gym.
Gueydan built a 17-9 first quarter lead before going on a 19-4 second quarter flurry for a 36-13 advantage at the half. In the second half, Gueydan managed to outpoint the Lady Bulldogs by a 31-21 margin, securing the 67-34 win.
Leading scorers for the Lady Bulldogs were Hailey McDaniel with 18 points while Alyrria Austin and Rylie Candella poured in eight points apiece.
Centerville will return to action on Friday at Central Catholic in District 7-1A action.
FRANKLIN 43, BERWICK 39
BERWICK _ Kaira Butler led the Franklin Lady Hornets to a 43-39 victory over the Berwick Lady Panthers in District 8-3A action here Tuesday at the Berwick High School Gym.
Franklin defeated Berwick by a final score of 43-39. The Lady Hor-nets opened with a 13-10 lead before the Berwick Lady Panthers grabbed a 25-17 cushion at the half.
Berwick clung to a narrow 31-32 lead at the end of three quarters. Franklin benefited from a 12-7 run down the stretch to pull out the 43-39 victo-ry.
Kaira Butler led the Franklin Lady Hornets in scoring with 16 points on 8 FGs. Jazmine Byers canned 10 points on 4 FGs and 2 of 4 FTs. Kenyoda Cormier struck for 9 points on 3 FGs and 1 3FG.
Sta’Trail Butler finished with 5 points on 1 3FG and 2 of 4 FTs. Jazmin Brent added 2 points on 1 FG and Dy’real Notto scored 1 point on 1 of 3 FTs.
Berwick was led by Madison Carlin with 23 points.
Next up for the Lady Hornets will be at E D White on Friday.
