Charlie Barron earns Class 1A all-state honors

Staff Report
Central Catholic can push the number of its Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state baseball honorees to five as Charlie Barron was an honorable mention selection on the team released Tuesday.
Barron, a junior, was omitted from the list and Matthew Barbier mentioned in his place as an honorable mention selection in the list used by The Daily Review Tuesday.
However, a Louisiana Sports Writers Association representative confirmed Tuesday afternoon that there was a mix-up, and Barron should have been listed as the honorable mention selection, not Barbier. Barbier was a first-team selection at catcher.
Barron finished his junior season with a 7-1 mark, a 1.44 ERA and 47 strikeouts.
Amazingly, before Barron saw some time on the mound as a sophomore, Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said Barron didn’t know the last time he had pitched.
However, after getting work as a sophomore and last summer, Jensen said Barron improved, noting that he threw strikes and had a breaking ball.
“This season he really stepped his game up and became a complete pitcher,” Jensen said.
The Central Catholic coach, who said Barron had one of his better performances this season against E.D. White, also noted that Barron was a good hitter for the Eagles.
He was another one of the Eagles who waited for their time to get on the field and in the meantime improved, Jensen said.
Barron joins teammates Barron Courtney, Barbier, Bryson Barbier and Samuel Guarisco as all-state honorees. Courtney and Matthew Barbier were both first-team selections, Courtney at first base and Matthew Barbier at catcher. Bryson Barbier, who saw time as pitcher and shortstop this season, and Guarisco, who saw time on the mound as well as the infield, both were honorable mention selections.
The Eagles finished their season with a 27-5 mark, falling to eventual state champion Cedar Creek, 13-8, in the Class 1A semifinals.
