Charlot will be representing Patterson
Patterson High School’s Daylon Charlot may be new to the long jump, but it certainly didn’t stop him from advancing to state.
Charlot, who Patterson track coach Mark Millet said began long jumping a month ago and competed at the Tri-City Relays before continuing at district and regionals, enters state with a leap of 21 feet, 8 inches. He finished third at regionals and is seeded seventh at state.
“Really, he’s very raw, very inexperienced in it technique wise, but the fact is he’s a hell of an athlete and he can jump.”
Millet said Charlot got started in the long jump after he asked his coach if he could compete in the event.
Millet agreed and Charlot thrived to make it to state.
However, it hasn’t been easy as Millet said at regionals, Charlot was in fourth place and needed about a 21-foot, 5-inch jump to get into third place. He reached 21-feet, 8-inches on his final jump.
“He did it with some pressure on him,” Millet said.
While he is new to the sport, Millet knows Charlot is capable of greater distances than what he has achieved thus far.
“He wants to try to get on the stand,” Millet said. “That’s the whole purpose of going there and hopefully get a good jump and gets out there.”
Willie Reed of Lusher has the top jump entering the state meet with a leap of 24 feet.
