Morgan City knocks off Assumption in eight innings
Matt Lorenzo drove a double to deep left field scoring Brady Fryou for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Morgan City knocked off Assumption 5-4 in District 7-4A action Tuesday.
In the top of the eighth inning with the score tied at 4, Brady Fryou led off the inning with a single to left field.
Lorenzo then came to the plate and doubled to deep left centerfield.
Assumption leftfielder Ty Domingue slipped on the play and the ball reached the wall allowing Fryou to score from first base.
“It’s the biggest win of the season for sure, keeping us with Assumption on top after the first round of district play,” Morgan City coach Tim Vidos said of the Tigers who sit at 3-1 and handed the Mustangs their first loss of district to slip to 2-1.
Vidos said because the district is full of young teams with outstanding pitching and good defenses, the scenario in last night’s game will be something that will be seen often in the Tigers’ district.
He said that’s why getting that win was important.
“Our kids are playing amazing baseball right now, and I'm proud of them,” Vidos said. “They’ve come to realize that anything is possible if you work hard enough and never stop fighting for that victory.”
Early on, each team scored a run in the second inning as Assumption homered to left field in the top of the inning, while Morgan City’s Lorenzo hit a shot to the right-center gap. The ball went to the wall, and Lorenzo scored on an inside the park home run.
Assumption scored two runs in the top of the third on back-to-back bunts for a 3-1 lead.
“Assumption gave us fits with bunting all night,” Vidos said. “We knew the bunting was going to happen and still could not make the plays. We spend each day working bunt coverages, as I'm sure Assumption does so with bunting. They won that part of the game.”
Morgan City rallied to tie the score with single runs in the fourth on Morrquise Charles’ double to deep right and in the fifth on Phillip Hutchinson’s single to centerfield that scored Josh Lorenzo.
Things were tense after the end of the play as both Josh Lorenzo and Assumption catcher Aidan Sanders were ejected from the game because of an incident after the play.
Each team scored a run in the sixth to knot the score at four where it remained until the bottom of the eighth.
Matt Lorenzo finished 2-for-4 with a double and an inside the park home run to lead Morgan City.
Other top hitters included Abram Hartley, 2-for-4 with a double; Hutchinson and Fryou, each 2-for-4; and Charles, 1-for-3 with a double.
On the mound, Hutchinson earned the win in relief. In 4.2 innings of action, he surrendered a run on a hit with five walks and five strikeouts.
Ethan Scioneaux started the game for Morgan City and in 3.1 innings, he surrendered three runs on five hits with three walks.
Morgan City (7-10) will return to action today when it travels to face Berwick. Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m., while varsity will follow at 6 p.m.
