E.D. White scores five in the 8th inning to defeat Berwick in extra innings

E.D. White and Berwick engaged in a scoreless pitching duel for seven innings Saturday in a District 8-3A contest with district championship implications.
However, E.D. White, one of the top-ranked teams in Class 3A according to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, found its groove in the top of the eighth inning, plating five runs en route to a 5-0 victory.
The win gave E.D. White the edge in the district standings as the Cardinals now are 8-1 in league play, while Berwick is tied for second with Erath at 7-2. Berwick (13-14) and E.D. White will play their second district contest against each other today at 4 p.m. in Thibodaux.
In Saturday’s contest, E.D. White outhit Berwick, 7-2, while the Panthers committed four errors to the Cardinals one miscue.
Despite a solid outing, Cameron Wiley suffered the loss for Berwick. In 7.1 innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on five hits with two walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts.
Offensively, Bradley Gray led Berwick with a 1-for-3 performance, while Logan Angeron was 1-for-4.
North Vermilion
shuts out Patterson
North Vermilion defeated Patterson in District 8-3A action on the road Saturday.
The Patriots scored all of their runs in two innings, with two runs in the first and four more in the third.
North Vermilion outhit Patterson, 6-2.
Offensively, Jamey Fabre led Patterson with a 1-for-3 performance with a double. Bryce Beaubouef also was 1-for-3 for Patterson.
Joel Singleton suffered the loss on the mound. In five innings, he surrendered six earned runs on five hits with four walks, two hit batters and four strikeouts.
Patterson (10-15 overall, 1-8 in district) will return to action today when it hosts North Vermilion in a 5 p.m. contest.
Vandebilt Catholic sweeps Morgan City
Vandebilt Catholic swept Morgan City in District 7-4A baseball action this past weekend.
The Terriers eased past Morgan City, 10-1, Friday, while on Saturday, Vandebilt Catholic defeated Morgan City, 9-8, in 11 innings.
The losses were crucial in the district action as Morgan City slipped from first to a tie for third in the district race with South Lafourche as each have 5-3 marks.
Meanwhile, Vandebilt Catholic and South Terrebonne are tied atop the league standings with 6-2 marks.
On Friday, the score was tied at one after an inning, but Vandebilt scored three runs in the second, one in the fourth, four in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh for the win.
The Terriers outhit Morgan City, 10-5.
Malik Phillips led Morgan City with a 1-for-3 performance with a double and a stolen base.
Morquisse Charles suffered the loss on the mound. In five innings, he surrendered five runs — two earned — on six hits with three walks, two hit batters and three strikeouts.
In Saturday’s contest, the score was tied after one inning, and while Vandebilt took a 3-1 lead after two innings, Morgan City had retaken the lead by the top of the fourth at 4-3.
Vandebilt responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth for an 8-6 lead heading into the top of the seventh.
However, Morgan City tied the game in the top of the seventh and held Vandebilt Catholic off the score board to force extra innings with the game tied at 8.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the 11th when Vandebilt Catholic got the walk-off win via a run-scoring single.
The teams combined for 23 hits (Vandebilt outhit Morgan City, 14-9), 21 walks (Morgan City 9, Vandebilt 12), 32 runners left on base (Morgan City 15, Vandebilt 17).
Vandebilt Catholic overcame six errors for the win. Morgan City committed two miscues.
Of Vandebilt Catholic’s nine runs, six were earned.
Meanwhile, just two of Morgan City’s eight runs were earned.
Morgan City and Vandebilt Catholic combined to throw 395 pitches. Seven pitchers were used in the game — two by Morgan City and five by Vandebilt Catholic.
The teams combined for seven hit batters.
Rhett Fryou suffered the loss in relief for Morgan City. In 3.2 innings, he surrendered one unearned run on three hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Starter Philip Hutchinson pitched 6.1 innings. He surrendered eight runs — six earned — on 11 hits with nine walks, four hit batters and one strikeout.
Offensively, Charles led Morgan City with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Other top contributors included Abram Hartley, 1-for-4, a double and an RBI; Phillips, 2-for-6, two runs; and Evan Stadalis, 2-for-7, an RBI.
Morgan City (12-13, 5-3) will return to action today when it hosts Assumption in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
CCHS-Gueydan game rained out
Central Catholic’s District 7-1A contest at Gueydan Friday was rained out. The Eagles (18-4, 8-1) now will play a doubleheader at Gueydan today, beginning at 3 p.m.
