Hahnville defeats Patterson 38-7

By CORWIN MURRAY

Hahnville overpowered Patterson 38-7 Friday, handing the Lumberjacks their second straight loss to open the season.
Patterson (0-2) got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Sirbatian Charles floated a pass into the back of the end zone where standout Nehemiah Augustus leaped over a defender for a one-handed, 14-yard highlight-film touchdown with 6:12 remaining in the first quarter.
Augustus also set up the score with a 45-yard catch and run on the first play of Patterson’s possession. He had four catches for 69 yards and a score.
Hahnville answered with a 12-play drive that ended with Thomas Rasco’s 28-yard field-goal with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
“I thought we had a little momentum early with big plays to Nehemiah,” Patterson Coach Chad Blanchard said. “But in a football game, there are a lot of things that go on, and you have to keep your momentum and we didn’t. I thought that we had trouble staying on the field offensively, so we couldn’t develop or keep any kind of consistency, which was the biggest thing that hurt us.”
Patterson marched down the field on the opening possession of the second quarter, but the drive stalled at the Hahnville 18-yard line with the ’Jacks turning the ball over on downs.
On a third-and-9 from its 19-yard line, Hahnville struck with an 81-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Neal to Michael Gray on a slant pass. Rasco’s kick gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter.
Patterson went three-and-out on its next three possessions before Hahnville struck again.
The Tigers got the ball back with 1:16 remaining before the half.
Neal hit running back Anthony Williams on a screen-pass, and he raced 61 yards for a touchdown to extend Hahnville’s lead to 17-7.
Patterson speedster D.J. Jones took the ensuing kickoff and returned it to the Hahnville 44, breaking four tackles. But the ’Jacks took a knee with 40 seconds remaining.
“This (is) what it came down to, in my opinion,” Blanchard said. “We should have been off the field 10 minutes before that, but we didn’t make any first downs.
“We were three-and-out three straight times, so I wasn’t going to put us in a position where it was going to happen again, even with 10 or 15 seconds left on the clock,” he said.
“I didn’t have confidence in what we were doing because we didn’t execute three straight times, so I was willing to take it into the half, talk about it and try to get things fixed without anything else bad happening,” Blanchard said.
Hahnville carried its momentum into the second half, scoring on its first play from scrimmage.
Williams took the kickoff to the Patterson 43, and Devonte Clark did the rest, breaking free for a 56-yard score with 11:42 remaining in the third quarter. The extra-point kick pushed the Tigers’ lead to 24-7.
Patterson went three-and-out again before Hahnville marched downfield on a 12-play, 52-yard drive that Williams capped with a 1-yard run with 4:09 remaining to extend the lead to 31-7.
Hahnville added another long touchdown after a Charles interception.
Backup quarterback Matthew Boyer hit Kevin Comardelle for a 49-yard score with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
“Our defense was on the field entirely too long,” Blanchard said. “We need to do a better job of executing on offense. We have to move the ball, get in the end zone, and that’s the area we are hurting in now.
However, Blanchard said, “experience is the best teacher, and we’re going to keep working and getting better.”
Patterson started 0-3 last season before going on a run that ended in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
The ’Jacks will travel to New Iberia Friday to face Catholic High-New Iberia. Catholic High beat Erath 24-6 last week.
