Hanson Lady Tigers defeat Highland Baptist 50-27

NEW IBERIA _ Carlie Pellerin and Casey Fitzgerald combined for 37 points, leading the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers to a 50-27 triumph over the Highland Baptist Lady Lions in the District 7-1A opener here Monday at the HBCS Gym.
Hanson Memorial (9-1, 1-0) seized control from the opening tap, going on a 10-4 lead at the end of the initial quarter.
Hanson went on an 18-8 spurt in the second stanza for a comfortable 28-12 halftime cushion.
The Lady Tigers kept the hot hand in the third period, building an insurmountable 44-18 advantage following a 10-point 16-6 run. Highland Baptist managed to outpoint the Lady Tigers 9-6 down the stretch but it was too little, too late as the Hanson cruised to the 50-27 district-opening win.
Pellerin led the Lady Tigers with 19 points on one trey and 8 deuces. She also collected six rebounds along with three assists, two steals and one block.
Fitzgerald scorched the nets for 18 points, on a pair of treys, five deuces and 2 of 7 freebies along with five rebounds, four steals and one assist.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Tigers were: Baylee Young, 5 points, 7 rebounds, 7 blocks; Allyssa Young, 3 points; Sarah Daniel, 3 points and Olivia St. Blanc, 2 points.
On the night, the Hanson Lady Tigers outpointed Highland Baptist in nearly every statistical category. The Hanson Lady Tigers held a 21-10 edge in scoring with 17 two-pointers and four three-pointers while collecting 40 rebounds, 11 blocks and 14 steals.
Hanson (9-1, 1-0) will open play in the annual Hanson Holiday Classic on Thursday at 8 p.m. versus Franklin at the Billy Gene Talbot Gymnasium.
