Hanson Memorial girls, boys capture Holiday Classic Titles
Hanson Memorial’s girls and boys swept the 2014 Hanson Holiday Classic Titles Saturday at the Billy Gene Talbot Gymnasium.
Hanson’s Lady Tigers captured the 74th annual Holiday Classic title in the girls division with a 38-35 victory over the Abbeville Lady Wildcats.
The Hanson Tigers earned the 74th annual Holiday Classic Boys Title with a nail-biting 59-58 victory over the West St. Mary Wolfpack.
This year’s Hanson Holiday Classic _ the oldest running tournament in the state of Louisiana _ was filled with excitement until the very end with both the HMS girls and boys pulling out pulsating last-minute victories.
Led by Most Valuable Player Haley Bollinger and All-Tournament Selections Alyssa Young and Stephanie Roig, the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers seized this year’s Holiday Classic title with a 38-35 victory over the Abbeville Lady Wildcats.
Hanson’s Bo Barrilleaux was named the Most Valuable Player with his game-winning 25-foot 3-pointer while Royce Norton and Britt Young were selected to the All-Tournament team in the HMS Tigers’ thrilling 59-58 victory over the West St. Mary Wolfpack. West St. Mary’s Duante Charles and David Robertson was named to the All-Tournament team.
HANSON LADY TIGERS 38, ABBEVILLE LADY WILDCATS 35
Hanson’s Lady Tigers went on a 14-10 fourth-quarter run to rally past the Abbeville Lady Wildcats 38-35.
Abbeville built a 5-2 lead in the opening quarter before the HMS Lady Tigers trimmed the lead to 14-13 at the half thanks to an 11-9 flurry. Hanson trailed Abbeville by one point at 25-24 in the third quarter. In the final period, HMS outpointed Abbeville 14-10 to earn comeback 38-35 victory and the 2014 Holiday Classic Title.
In the decisive final period, Hanson’s Roig, Bollinger, Sarah Sonnier, Casey Fitzgerald and Young all combined for 14 points. Roig led the way with five points while Bollinger and Sonnier tossed in three points each with Fitzgerald and Young bagging two points each.
Roig and Fitzgerald led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively. Roig canned one trey, three deuces and 2 of 3 free throws for 11 points. Fitzgerald finished with 10 points on a pair of treys along with a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Other top scorers for the Lady Tigers were: Bollinger, 8; Young, 4; Sonnier, 4 and Baylee Young, 1.
HANSON TIGERS 59, WEST ST. MARY WOLFPACK 58
Bo Barrilleaux connected on a 25-foot three-point with 1.2 seconds remaining, giving the Hanson Tigers an incredible 59-58 win over the West St. Mary Wolfpack.
Hanson used treys by Barrilleaux and Norton and a two-pointer by Josh Sanchez to build an 8-7 first quarter lead. Robertson drained a trey with Charles and Tarik Rouchon bagged two-pointers for West. St. Mary in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Wolfpack went on a 23-12 run for a 30-20 lead at intermission. Robertson sparked the Wolfpack surge with 10 points one three treys and one free throw. Hanson whittled West St. Mary’s lead to three points at 39-36 at the end of three quarters thanks to a 16-9 advantage. In the fourth quarter, Barrilleaux fired in a the game-winning long-range trey with 1.2 seconds left to play giving the Tigers a hard-fought 59-58 victory.
Barrilleaux led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points on five treys and 2 of 2 free throws. Brit Young also finished in double digits with 16 points on seven floor shots and 2 of 7 freebies. Jacob Steward added nine points while Norton tallied six points with Brennan Young and Sanchez tossing in two points apiece.
Robertson pumped in a game-high 20 points for the Wolfpack on six treys and 2 of 3 free throws. Charles tossed in 14 points on seven field goals. Other top scorers for the Wolfpack were: Jason Pierre, 6; Thaddeus Gabriel, 6; Chris Snowden, 5; Rouchon, 4 and Carey Jackson, 3.
