Hanson Memorial got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter Friday against Berwick and never looked back, cruising past the Panthers 41-14 to remain undefeated on the season.
The Hanson Memorial Tigers drove down the field on their first possession to the Panthers’ 26-yard line, but quarterback Bo Barrilleaux threw an interception after the ball was stripped from a Tigers’ receiver in the end zone.
The Tigers responded quickly, scoring on their next two possessions. Barrilleaux threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Stewart, and the pair connected again on a 21-yard touchdown before the end of the first quarter after Berwick lost a fumble on its own 25-yard line.
“We wanted to get on them early,” Hanson Memorial head coach Brett Blakey said. “We caught a tough break on a ball that floated on us in the end zone.”
After that play, the Tigers’ offense didn’t look back and excelled the rest of the game, Blakey said. Berwick head coach Craig Brodie said, “They just played a lot better than we did.”
The Tigers’ extended their lead to 28-0 near halftime before Berwick finally got in the Tigers’ end zone with 52 seconds left in the half. Quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Justin Morvant to cap a 60-yard drive and bring the score to 28-7 at halftime.
The Tigers didn’t slow down in the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns, the first on a 1-yard Jeff Soulis run and the second score on an 18-yard pass from Barrilleaux to Clint Young. Soulis led the Tigers with 177 yards rushing, while Barrilleaux passed for 182 yards and five touchdowns.
Both teams used the fourth quarter as an opportunity to get some younger players in the game. Berwick freshman quarterback Collin Louviere got into the game on the Panthers’ final drive, which culminated with an 8-yard touchdown run by Louviere.
Hanson Memorial worked on several different packages, and Blakey said he liked the way all of them worked.
“From now on, it’s just trying to get 1 percent better every single day,” he said.
The Tigers were able to get some of their junior varsity players in the game during the fourth quarter, Blakey said. Hanson Memorial starts district play this week against Ascension Episcopal, and the Tigers hope to keep up the momentum so far this season, Blakey said. The Tigers improved to 3-0 this season with the win.
After the game “got out of hand” with the Panthers trailing 41-7, Brodie said it was time for the younger players to get some experience. Still, Brodie said he would have preferred those players be in the game due to the Panthers being so far ahead.
Hanson Memorial amassed nearly twice the amount of total offense that Berwick had. The Tigers accumulated 411 total yards compared to the Panthers’ 216 total yards.
Berwick senior linebacker Tre Matthews got injured during Friday’s game and is expected to be out for the season, Brodie said. Brodie called Matthews “one of the hardest working kids I’ve ever coached. It’s hard to take. It really is.”
The team has to band together now that Matthews, one of the team’s captains, will not be playing the rest of the season, Brodie said.
“Football’s a fleeting thing,” he said. “It could be over any play. That’s why they play every play like it’s their last play because it might be. I think they have some realization of that tonight with their friend getting injured.”
Berwick will play its homecoming game this Friday against KIPP Renaissance, which has a lot of gifted athletes, Brodie said. The Panthers beat KIPP Renaissance 7-0 for last year’s homecoming game.
“Looking at the way we didn’t tackle very well with the athletes we had today, we’re going to have a lot of work to do next week,” Brodie said.
