Highland Baptist edges HMS Tigers

NEW IBERIA _ The Highland Baptist Lions edged the Hanson Memorial Tigers 36-29 in District 7-1A action here Friday.
Highland Baptist improved to 5-2 and 2-2 on the season.
The Hanson Memorial Tigers slipped to 5-3 and 2-3 on the year.
Highland’s Brontre Griffin scored five touchdowns while tallying 274 rushing yards to spark the Lions.
Hanson’s Jeff Soulis, who finished with 97 yards on 21 totes, scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 12 and 1 yard.
Griffin lifted the Lions outfront by a score of 6-0 on a 15-yard run. Logan Jordan made good on the kick, sending the Lions out to a 7-0 advantage.
Soulis struck on a 12-yard TD as HMS trailed by a 7-6 margin at the end of the first period.
Griffin scored on a 61-yard TD scamper before HMS’ Jacob Stewart scored on a 23-yard TD strike from quarterback Britt Young. On the two point conversion, Young hit paydirt as the Tigers knotted the score at 14-14.
In the third quarter, Griffin scored touchdowns on runs of 15 and 13 as the Lions went ahead by a 28-14 margin.
Hanson’s Young tossed a 32-yard TD to Royce Norton and the Tigers closed the gap at 28-21.
In the fourth quarter, Soulis scored on a one-yard plunge before tacking on the two-point conversion, giving the Tigers a short-lived 29-28 advantage.
Griffin brought the Lions back with a 3-yard TD and the two-point conversion as HBCS rallied for a 36-29 win over the Hanson Tigers.
HMS (5-3, 2-3) will play host to Vermilion Catholic (7-1, 4-0) on Friday in District 7-1A at McCloskey Field.
