After a 30-minute lightning delay, the Hanson Memorial Tigers turned back the Hamilton Christian Warriors 6-0 Friday in non-district action at rainy and soggy McCloskey Field.
Hanson Memorial (1-2) earned its first win of the season by the 6-0 score while also handing Hamilton Christian (2-1) its first loss of the season.
Hanson Coach Dale Creamer was extremely pleased with the play of his Tigers.
“This has been in the making over the past weeks as we have been working very hard,” he said. “We will savor this win and get prepared for our next opponent Ascension Episcopal on Friday in the opening of the District 7-1A season here at McCloskey Field.”
Hanson’s defense propelled the Tigers to the victory, turning the Warriors back from several golden opportunities to score.
“Our defense kept us in the game and they couldn’t play any better in this type of weather,” Creamer stated. “Our defense rose to the occasion and I compliment them for the game they played.”
Early rain forced the teams to play on a wet and soggy McCloskey Field during the first half. In the second half, the teams endured a 30-minute lightning delay which came during a heavy rain storm.
In the second quarter, Hanson strung together a methodical drive, building up the 6-0 lead when Luke Rodriguez hauled in an 8-yard scoring strike from quarterback Luke Lancon.
Hanson’s defense kept Hamilton Christian from scoring, preserving the Tigers’ first win of the season following the weather-delayed 6-0 victory.
According to Coach Creamer, Luke Lancon had a good night throwing and Luke Rodriguez had a good night catching and punting the football on the night.
Lancon and Rodriguez hooked up on the Tigers’ 8-yard score in the second quarter, giving Hanson Memorial the outright 6-0 victory.
Rodriguez also helped the Tigers with his punting as Creamer stated that he averaged over 30-yards per punt which kept the Warriors pinned down in their own territory.
Hanson Memorial (1-2) will play host to Ascension Episcopal (3-0) on Friday in the opening round of the District 7-1A action at McCloskey Field.
Hanson will host AES on Friday after posting a 6-0 victory over Hamilton Christian of Lake Charles during Week 3 of the high school season. Ascension Episcopal comes to Franklin on Friday with a perfect 3-0 record after posting a 34-6 victory over the Delcambre Panthers on Friday.

The West St. Mary Wolfpack and Highland Baptist contest was canceled due to heavy rain and lightning in the area Friday.
