HMS Tigers ease by Crusaders

The Hanson Memorial Tigers soared past the Christian Life Crusaders 49-21 Friday in non-district action at McCloskey Field.
Hanson (6-4) scored in every quarter including a 21-point outburst in the second period.
Hanson Memorial earned a berth in the state playoffs which opens Friday. Hanson Memorial, currently the No. 15 seed in the Division IV select, will travel to face No. 2 seed St. Mary’s on Friday in the state playoffs.
On Friday, running back Jeff Soulis and wide receiver Royce Norton led the way for the Tigers with outstanding individual efforts. Soulis rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns and Norton caught five passes for 111 yards and two scores.
Soulis raced six yards at the 7:55 mark of the first quarter to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage. Cameron Stovall booted the extra-point as the Tigers held a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Christian Life knotted the game at 7-7 when Jacob Williams completed a 58-yard pass to Justin Hutchinson before Michael Stinson added the point-after-touchdown with 38 seconds remaining in the first period.
Soulis darted untouched on a 34-yard TD with 9:31 showing on the clock in the second quarter before Stovall booted the P-A-T to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead.
Bo Barrilleaux fired a 67-yard scoring strike to Norton and Stovall’s kick sailed through the uprights as the Tigers moved to 21-7 with 2:52 remaining in the second quarter.
With 11 seconds remaining, Williams completed an 18-yard scoring strike to Jacob Kibodi as the Crusaders closed the gap at 21-14.
On the ensuing kickoff, Royce Norton weaved his way to an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Stovall’s kick was good and the Tigers took a 28-14 halftime lead.
Soulis ran for another 34-yard touchdown while Norton hauled in 20-yard TD aerial from Barrilleaux and Stovall raced 13 yards for a score to cap the scoring for the HMS Tigers.
Soulis finished the night with 23 carries for 223 yards for a 9-7 average and three touchdowns. Brant Broussard carried four times for 12 yards while Stovall had one carry for 13 yards and one touchdown. Hanson’s Jacob Srigley finished with two carries for 12 yards while Brandon Bonin had two totes for six yards.
Bo Barrilleaux connected on 6 of 10 passes for 109 yards and two scores.
Norton made five catches for 111 yards for an average of 22.2 yards per catch with two touchdowns.
Hanson (6-4) will travel to play St. Mary’s (9-1) in the 2014 Louisiana High School football playoff bracket-Division IV select Friday.
