What looked early like it could be a high-scoring, barn burner ended up being a one-sided rout as Patterson opened District 9-3A action at home Friday with a 45-13 win against Donalsonville.
After the Lumberjacks needed just one offensive play on its first possession to reach the end zone via a 31-yard pass from Sirbatian Charles to Mykel Jones, Donaldsonville responded on the ensuing kickoff when Davon Johnson fielded the ball and returned it 80 yards for a score.
Jamyrian Jenkens’ extra point tied the game at 7 with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter.
However, that was as close as the game would be for the remainder of the night as the Lumberjacks outscored the Tigers 38-6 the rest of the way.
The Lumberjacks were led offensively by running back Tristen Ausama, Charles and Jones. Ausama rushed 14 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns, while Charles completed 11-of-19 passes for 169 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Jones caught nine passes for 166 yards and all four of Charles’ touchdown passes.
After Donaldsonville’s kickoff return for a score, Patterson responded with another scoring drive, capped by a 41-yard touchdown pass from Charles to Jones for a 13-7 Patterson lead with 7:23 remaining in the first quarter.
However, after that, things cooled off for the remainder of the first quarter.
While Patterson got the ball inside Donaldsonville territory on its next two possessions, the Lumberjacks could not convert.
Defensively, though, the Lumberjacks held down Donaldsonville and quarterback Tyler Brown.
Patterson got on the scoreboard again almost midway through the second quarter when Charles again hit Jones for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Charles’ two-point conversion pass to Daylon Charlot was good to increase the Patterson lead to 21-7 with 8:33 remaining in the first half.
Patterson scored again later in the quarter when Ausama reached the end zone from three yards out for a 27-7 lead.
The drive was set up by an interception by Charlot.
The big play on offense during the drive came one play prior to Ausama’s touchdown run when Charles evaded the Donaldsonville pass rush and found Jones for what turned out to be a 37-yard completion down to the Tigers’ 3-yard line.
The Lumberjacks wasted little time hitting pay dirt again as on Donaldsonville’s second play of its ensuing drive, Nehemiah Augustus intercepted a pass by Tyler Brown and returned it for a touchdown and a 33-7 Patterson lead with 1:25 remaining in the first half.
Patterson picked off Brown three times during the contest and nearly picked off several other throws by the junior quarterback. Brown completed 19 of 44 pass attempts for 222 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions Friday.
Donaldsonville added a touchdown late in the first half on a quick, three-play drive that included long pass plays from Brown to Johnson for 32 yards and to Jaquel Gant for a 42-yard touchdown to cut Patterson’s lead to 33-13.
Patterson added two fourth-quarter touchdowns via Ausama runs of 8 yards and 25 yards.
The Lumberjacks (4-3), who have won four straight, will return to action Friday when it hosts E.D. White in a District 9-3A contest.
