Jesuit tops John Curtis for Division 1 title

(AP) — Trey LaForge connected with Kalija Lipscomb for a pair of touchdown passes, including a 45-yard, fourth-quarter TD to give Jesuit a 17-14 win over John Curtis in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division I State Championship game Friday night.
The win for the Blue Jays (12-2) is their first state championship since the 1960 season in their first trip to the state championship game since 1978.
Quarterback Myles Washington got John Curtis on the board in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run.
After LaForge connected with Lipscomb for a 35-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7, Washington found Jacob Bordelon with a 20-yard touchdown pass on the second-to-last play of the first half.
Jesuit cut the John Curtis lead to 14-10 midway through the third quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Crew Jacobs.
John Curtis (10-2) was looking for their state record 27th state championship.
University Lab beats Parkview Baptist 46-32
Two blocked punts by Will Keller and three rushing touchdowns by Nicholas Brossette helped University Laboratory School to a 46-32 win over Parkview Baptist in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division II State Championship Friday night.
A rematch of a regular season game that saw the Cubs win 28-7, the win for University High (13-0) marks their first state championship since the 1988 season.
Falling behind 14-0, the Cubs got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Manny Miles to Tre Jackson. Dylan Moses recovered the first of Keller’s two blocked punts in the end zone for a touchdown that tied the game at 14-all.
Trailing 20-16 early in the third quarter, Nicholas Brossette’s 5-yard touchdown run would give the Cubs the lead for good at 23-20.
Brossette finished the game with three rushing touchdowns and a state record 272 yards rushing.
Parkview Baptist finished the season with a 9-4 record.
Calvary Baptist 27,
Catholic-New Iberia 24
Calvary Baptist repeats as state champions after a 27-24 victory over Catholic High of New Iberia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division III championship game Friday.
Tied at 24 late in the fourth quarter, Calvary Baptist drove 70 yards for the game-winning score when Trevor Stevens kicked the go-ahead 26-yard field goal to give them the winning advantage.
Trailing 24-17 late in the third quarter, Catholic-New Iberia tied the game when Jason Pellerin’s seven-yard touchdown run capped a 14-play 69-yard drive.
Tied at 17, Shea Patterson gave Calvary a 24-17 lead when he found Vyron Brown for a 78-yard touchdown.
The win for the Cavaliers (12-1) is the second consecutive state championship for the program.
Catholic-New Iberia’s Panthers (12-1) were seeking their first state championship since the 1962 season.
Ouachita Christian 52, Southern Lab 6
Ouachita Christian scored 45 first-half points in a 52-6 victory over Southern Lab in Friday’s 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division IV State Championship Game.
Ouachita Christian took an early 7-0 lead on a 41-yard run by senior quarterback Chance Clowers. That was set up by an interception by Maverick Wilhite.
Later, Ouachita Christian’s Cade Spikes forced and recovered a fumble. Josh Pennebaker scored on the next play to make it 13-0.
Clowers had 159 yards passing in the first half and threw three touchdowns, two of them to James Anderson.
The lone score for Southern Lab (8-6) came on a 1-yard run by Darbbeon Profit late in the first quarter.
Ouachita Christian (11-3) claimed its sixth state championship and third since 2011.
