Central Catholic finished the girls’ basketball season on top of the Class 1A ranks earlier this month, winning the school’s first-ever Class 1A girls’ basketball title.
The wave of honors continued as the squad swept the individual honors on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State team released this weekend.
Central Catholic standout Meo Knight, a University of Alabama signee, took the Class 1A Most Valuable Player honors, while the Lady Eagles’ head coach, Jamarr Garrett was named Class 1A Coach of the Year.
Teammate Randi Brown also was a first-team selection.
Knight, a senior, had per-game averages of 18.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 4.6 steals.
Garrett said it is a testament to the respect that Knight has statewide to get state MVP honors even though she didn’t get the District’s MVP award.
Brown earned first-team honors after recording per game averages of 24.7 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 4.1 steals, earned the District MVP.
“It’s just the icing on the cake for it all for them,” Garrett said.
Both participated in the Louisiana Coaches Association All-Star game Saturday with Knight recording 12 points and five rebounds and Brown leading the West with 17 points and also recording six rebounds in an 89-86 loss.
Brown said last week she had scholarship offers from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Ole Miss. She said she would be deciding on her college destination in the coming weeks.
Garrett led the squad to a 29-4 mark in 2014.
Garrett said credit for his honor goes to assistant coach Joe Jones, who he said works just as hard as he does, and the players for doing the work on the court.
“We’re all representing Central Catholic, and I guess that’s just the most important thing,” Garrett said.
