Lady Tigers beat 'Jills in district opener

MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Lady Tigers opened Division 3, District 6 volleyball play with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-17) victory against Patterson.

Jaiveianna Jones led the Lady Tigers with 16 kills and a solo block, while Kloé Liner added three aces, four kills and nine digs.

Other top contributors included Marilynn Bailey, one ace, three kills, one assist and eight digs; Layne Reynaud, one ace, 18 assists and three digs; Savannah Loupe, four aces and nine digs; Brandi Ingram, two kills and four digs; and Taylor Prince, one ace, one assist and five digs.

Gaylen Grogan led Patterson with four kills, two digs, one block, one assist and four points.

Other top contributors included Nyria Robinson, two points, three kills, two digs and a block; Arian Grogan, four points, two kills, two digs and a block; Kailyn Johnson, five points, five digs and five assists; and Nia Madise, one ace, one point and two digs.

In junior varsity play, Morgan City won 25-21, 25-23.

Cecily Feliciano led the Lady Tigers with three aces, two kills, five assists and two digs, while Dwanna LeBeau had one ace, two kills and seven digs.

Other top contributors included Karley Guidry, two aces, two kills, three assists and five digs; Sara Gaudet, nine digs; Paige Loftin, one ace, one kill and two digs; and Brandi Albarado, one ace and three digs.

Morgan City (6-11 overall, 1-0 district) will return to action Thursday when it travels to Thibodaux to face E.D. White. Freshman action will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity play.

Patterson will resume play Thursday when it hosts Donaldsonville at 4 p.m.

Central Catholic knocks off Division 5’s top squad

Central Catholic knocked off Division 5’s top-ranked squad, Ascension Episcopal, in a five-game victory on the road Tuesday.

Central Catholic, Division 5’s fifth-ranked squad in the latest power ranking, lost the first game, 23-25, before winning the next two, 25-21, 25-23.

After falling in game 4, 23-25, Central Catholic took the deciding game, 15-12.

Central Catholic coach Latashia Wise said she wasn’t surprised by her team’s win.

“Going into this match, I knew that we could beat them,” Wise said. “Power rankings are only numbers. We’ve been here before against good teams, and I knew that we just had to finish. Our problem is not with playing with good teams. It’s finishing the match against good teams.”

Meo Knight had 32 kills and 15 digs for Central Catholic, while Kaitlyn Gros had 53 assists and Gee Garrett, 18 kills and three blocks.

Other top contributors included Elizabeth Garber, four aces and 20 digs; Olivia Crawford, four aces and 19 digs; and Megan Landry, 19 digs.

“I’m proud of my girls for rising to the level of competition,” Wise said. “It brings us one step closer to our goal. If we stay in our constraints of passing well and playing defense, we create a very big offense. The key to our success is to stay focused.”

Central Catholic (12-7) will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Ursuline Academy. Junior varsity action is set for a 4:30 p.m. start with varsity play to follow at 5:30 p.m.

Also, the Lady Eagles’ contest against Ascension Catholic, originally scheduled for a home game on Saturday, has been postponed until Oct. 17.

Berwick defeats

Donaldsonville

Berwick won its Division 3, District 6 opener on the road against Donaldsonville, 25-10, 25-12, 25-13.

Brie Hill led the Lady Panthers with three aces, 18 kills, two solo blocks, a block assist and three digs.

Other top contributors included Ashton Morales, two kills, two blocks, 19 assists and five digs; Hannah Carpenter, three aces, one kill and seven digs; Rennen Delatte, two aces, one assist and four digs; and Maddie Gray, three kills and a block assist.

In junior varsity action, Berwick won 25-19, 25-12.

Berwick (9-6) will return to action Thursday when it travels to Lutcher. Junior varsity action is set for a 4:30 p.m. start with varsity play to follow at 5:30 p.m.
