LCA comes back to defeat CCHS

Central Catholic came out strong against Lafayette Christian, Class 1A’s second-ranked squad, in a crucial District 7-1A contest, but the Knights overcame the Eagles and left with a 70-61 victory and the District 7-1A title.
While Central Catholic led 19-11 after the first quarter and 35-29 at the half, Lafayette Christian outscored Central Catholic 20-8 in the third period for a 49-43 lead after three quarters.
The Knights outscored the Eagles again in the final period, 21-18.
“I thought we had a really good game plan going in,” Central Catholic coach Ree Case said.
However, Case said the Eagles went through a scoring drought in the third quarter where the Eagles missed some easy shots and Lafayette Christian made theirs.
In the fourth quarter, he said Central Catholic couldn’t keep up with Lafayette Christian, noting the Knights made 13 of 15 attempts from the free throw line in the fourth quarter alone.
The Eagles struggled at the free throw line where they made just 2 of 14 attempts in the contest.
“You got to make free throws to win a big game like this, and we just didn’t do it,” he said.
Despite the loss, it was a much better outing than earlier this season when Lafayette Christian defeated Central Catholic 94-61 in Lafayette, snapping a 39-game district winning streak for the Eagles.
It also was a better effort for the squad than nearly a week earlier against another top five Class 1A team, Metairie Park Country Day, who had defeated the Eagles 78-44.
“We are playing better at this time, which is good,” Case said. “It’s really helped us to have a big game like this at the end of district.”
Cedric Gant led the Eagles in Friday’s contest with 20 points, while Nicholas Case had 13 and Tyler Hoffpauir, 11.
Central Catholic finished the contest with nine 3-pointers, three each from Case, Hoffpauir and Gant.
Lafayette Christian hit seven treys.
The Eagles will continue a tough stretch of games with a contest tonight against Patterson High School in Morgan City. Junior varsity action is set for 5 p.m. and varsity to follow at 6 p.m.
Patterson defeats
E.D. White
The Patterson Lumberjacks cruised past E.D. White in District 9-3A action Friday with a 66-30 win in Patterson.
Patterson led 15-5 after the first quarter, 35-12 at halftime, and 51-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
“The guys came out with great intensity,” Patterson coach Ryan Taylor said. “I was pleased to see that after the emotional game against Donaldsonville. There was no let down from the previous game and I was glad to see that.”
Larry Turner led Patterson with 16 points, while Taylan Grogan and Daylon Charlot also reached double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Other top contributors included Nehemiah Augustus and Kenneth Washington, seven points each; Malik Garrett four; and DJ Jones three.
Morgan City falls to
Vandebilt Catholic
The Morgan City Tigers fell to Vandebilt Catholic in Houma, 52-38.
Marquise Green and Buddy Humphrey each led Morgan City with 14 points apiece in the District 7-1A loss. Other top contributors included Jaylen Jones and Brady Fryou with five points apiece.
Morgan City will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Assumption in a 6 p.m. contest.
Berwick falls to
Donaldsonville
A big second and third quarter helped the Donaldsonville Tigers defeat Berwick, 83-43 in Donaldsonville Friday.
While Berwick trailed just 15-11 after the first period, Donaldsonville outscored them 50-19 in the next two quarters, taking a 44-20 lead into halftime and a 65-30 lead after three quarters.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 19 points, while other top contributors included Brandon Naverro, eight; Gabe Soto, six; and Cody Roberie, five.
Berwick will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Patterson in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
