Lorenzo lifts MCHS past Assumption, 4-3

Matt Lorenzo made a huge play in the field and at the plate to lift the Morgan City Tigers to a 4-3 win against Assumption on Senior Night Thursday.
With the Tigers and Mustangs tied at 3 in the top of the seventh inning and Assumption with a runner at third and two outs, Lorenzo dove for a run-saving catch in right field to prevent the Mustangs, who have already clinched the District 7-4A title, from scoring.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Morgan City’s Evan Stadalis singled, followed by Brady Fryou’s hit. Grant Perry was intentionally walked before Lorenzo came up to bat and singled to left field, scoring Stadalis for the Tigers’ walk-off win.
Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added two more runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-0 advantage.
Morgan City plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, one on Perry’s hit and another on a two-run error by Assumption’s catcher after he overthrew third base, and the ball went to the left field wall, allowing Fryou and Ethan Scioneaux, who was running for Perry, to score.
Nick Spinella earned the win for Morgan City. In seven innings, he surrendered three runs on four hits with three walks and fanned one.
Offensively, Fryou finished 2-for-4, while Perry was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Lorenzo, 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Morgan City will return to action Monday when it plays at Patterson in a 5 p.m. contest.
