Patterson hopes to take a big step forward Friday against Catholic High-New Iberia after falling in consecutive weeks to Class 5A teams.
“We competed and we came out of those games healthy,” Patterson head coach Marvin Dantzler said. “But this week we face a really good 2A team in Catholic High. We should be able to matchup better this week, and I think we got better in the first two games.”
Patterson (0-2) struggled with Hahnville all night a week ago en route to a 30-0 loss at the Sugar Dome. The Tigers rushed for nearly 400 yards while holding Patterson to just 91 yards on the ground.
Hahnville scored on its second possession when standout running back Anthony Williams broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter. Thomas Rassco added the point-after kick for a 7-0 lead.
Hahnville added a safety with 9:28 remaining in the second period to extend its lead to 9-0.
The Tigers’ other standout running back, Davante Clark, got into the act with a 7-yard scoring run with 6:10 remaining in the first half to push the Tigers’ lead to 16-0.
Clark ran for 158 yards and a touchdown against Patterson, while Williams had 148 yards and three touchdowns.
“They had some big runs,” Dantzler said after the game. “They’re a quality football team, and we knew that coming in. Hahnville always has a good football team. But I think we got better, playing a big, physical football team of the likes we probably won’t see the rest of the season. I was proud that we played hard in the second half because (we) didn’t let this get totally out of hand.”
Patterson quarterback Dillan Giandelone led the ’Jacks with 60 yards rushing, while Dajon Richard had 18 yards and Dontre Nicholas, 11 yards.
Giandelone was 4-of-10 passing for 29 yards.
Richard had two receptions for 18 yards to lead the Patterson pass-catchers.
The Lumberjacks had just 120 yards of total offense Friday.
Through two games, Giandelone leads Patterson on the ground and through the air. He has rushed 32 times for 147 yards and has completed 12 of 28 passes for 154 yards with a score and two interceptions.
Richard has 23 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown for Patterson.
Catholic High, No. 10 this week in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 2A polls, defeated Erath, 54-14, a week ago.
Catholic High quarterback Diallo Landry totaled 179 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
The Panthers erupted for 33 points in the second half.
“They’re pretty good,” Dantzler said. “They beat Erath by 40, and they’re (Erath) in our district.”
Jadan Stokes leads the Catholic High rushing attack this season with 20 carries for 305 yards and five scores, while Diallo Landry isn’t far behind with 30 carries for 300 yards and four scores. Stokes’ rushing total is ranked 18th among all classes, while Landry’s 300 yards is tied for 20th.
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Sugar Dome.
