Staff Report

No. 18 Lusher Charter pulled off a mild upset against No. 15 Berwick High 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-13) in the first round of the Division III playoffs in Berwick Thursday.
“It was a hard fought game that we couldn’t get control of,” Berwick High coach Heather Templet said. “We had opportunities to take control but couldn’t put the ball away when needed. I’m proud of the way the girls fought back and stayed in the games.”
As a team, Berwick recorded three blocks and 73 digs.
Ashton Morales led the team with three aces, nine kills, one block, four assists and 18 digs.
Other top contributors included Mary Jordan Melancon, seven assists and 14 digs; Sydney Aucoin, six kills and one block; Brittany Roberie, one kill and 16 digs; Rosalyn Gros, 11 digs; Madeleine Hover, two kills, one block, three assists and two digs; and Emma Hover, seven digs.
Lusher Charter, which improves to 13-14 overall, will continue postseason play when it travels to face No. 2 Lutcher, whose record stands at 31-6.
Berwick finishes its season with a 14-19 overall mark.
The Lady Panthers will lose two seniors from this year’s squad, Morales and Madeleine Hover.
“We will really miss Ashton and Madeleine next year,” Templet said. “They were a great group of seniors who each brought something different to the team. They have given us (four) years of hard work, and we hope to continue building this program with the foundation they have given us.”
